http://geraniosgarden.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
A not so simple garden. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Another gardening year gone, a new one to come. A special glad hybrid of mine with delicate picotee spotting. Tigridia vanhouteii pollinated by wasp. Lapeirousia schimperi, a tall summer grower unlike most in its genus. Ursinia from an old seed mix from Kirstenbosch, alas it did not set seeds. Impatiens bicolor, its indestructible around here. Crepis rubra, a nice but short lived annual. Rudbeckia subtomentosa, a long and spectacular bloomer. Liatris ...

A not so simple garden. Saturday, July 14, 2012. Border Penstemons, P. gloxinioides "Sensation". There are named cultivars of this that are propagated from cutting, I did get a couple of these from Forest Farm and am curious to see how they compare to the seed grown plants. Right now neither of the two plants from FF is in bloom, but I anticipate they will do so in about a month or so. Diverse Dianthus in the Garden. Semidouble dianthus x allwoodii. Another cool patterned flower. Diverse Dianthus in the ...

Pycnostachys dawei, a tale of storage and survival. I do wish I had realized the benefits of cold storage of seeds before, as there are a few pelargonium species I had during my research days at Cornell that I set seed on, but that I lost when the seed got too old to regenerate after a few years at room temperature. A not so simple garden. Friday, January 30, 2015. An Indoor South African Garden. Pelargonium incrassatum, pink form. Freesia is not quite as speciose as the above genera, but it also has the same basic distribution with most species being winter growers. Many are fragrant to those who can smell them, apparently this ability is genetically controlled in humans. Freesia fucata is an early bloomer, most of the other freesia species I grow are yet to bloom. Oxalis melanosticta in fall 2013. Friends of the G...

A not so simple garden. Monday, September 2, 2013. I also want to announce a new forum, created by Jonathan Mejia and myself (well Jonathan is really the technical wiz behind the forum's workings, I'm less computer literate having not grown up with them) for South African plant aficionados who want to grow them in temperate zones (Z7 and lower). Check it out at http:/ zone7southafrica.proboards.com/. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). South African Plants for Temperate Climates Forum. View my complete profile.

A not so simple garden: February 2015

A not so simple garden. Sunday, February 1, 2015. Osteospermums in the Garden, and Don't Always Believe What They Tell You. It is possible that Avalanche is mostly sterile not because it is an interspecific cross but because many Asteraceae are self incompatible and all stock of this variety is cutting raised. Sometimes even with self incompatible Asteraceae one gets a good seed or two anyway. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). South African Plants for Temperate Climates Forum. John Grimshaw's Garden Diary.
