Oregon Woodworker by Andy Margeson: Screen doors
http://oregonwoodworker.blogspot.com/2014/12/screen-doors.html
Tuesday, December 30, 2014. As I've explained, there are long pauses in my woodworking and my blogging as I work on the very nice but sadly neglected 35 year-old house we bought last year. Ralph (The Accidental Woodworker) commented that he is interested in my efforts to rehabilitate it, so here goes. Here's what it looks like before paint and screen replacement:. One door down, five to go. December 30, 2014 at 11:43 AM. Nice fix on the doors. Did you give any thoughts to a floating tenon? I think floati...
Oregon Woodworker by Andy Margeson: Review of Work Sharp 3000
http://oregonwoodworker.blogspot.com/2014/12/review-of-work-sharp-3000.html
Thursday, December 4, 2014. Review of Work Sharp 3000. I think most of us are weary of hearing woodworkers explain why their sharpening method is absolutely the best option and be assured that is definitely not my intention. In fact, my own view is that every sharpening method involves tradeoffs and the best method for a particular woodworker depends on the tools they have, the work they do, their preferences and other factors. I bought a Work Sharp 3000 several years ago. Why did I buy it? Subscribe to:...
Oregon Woodworker by Andy Margeson: OK, this is bizarre but ...
http://oregonwoodworker.blogspot.com/2015/04/ok-this-is-bizarre-but.html
Tuesday, April 7, 2015. OK, this is bizarre but . I have a brainstorm. The thing about my brainstorms is that many of them don't pan out, but sometimes they do with very satisfying results. Hey, hitters in baseball are considered good if they can bat .300. To have my idea make any sense at all though, I have to give you some background as to how disparate ideas came together. I found Chris Schwarz's folding campaign stool very intriguing. Here's some good pics. My rule when designing a prototype is to on...
Oregon Woodworker by Andy Margeson: Arrrggghhh... then OK
http://oregonwoodworker.blogspot.com/2014/12/arrrggghhh-then-ok.html
Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Arrrggghhh. then OK. With magnification, it appears to be partly on and partly off the glue line, right on the top in the most visible possible spot! Next subject, what to do about it? Replacement was impossible without starting the gallery over. Since I have never encountered anything like this before, I consulted my finishing books for advice on alternatives. The two best candidates seemed to be:. Insert medium viscosity CA glue into the crack and then sand sawdust into it;.
Oregon Woodworker by Andy Margeson: Bicycle seat shop stool, Pt. II.
http://oregonwoodworker.blogspot.com/2015/04/bicycle-seat-shop-stool-pt-ii.html
Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Bicycle seat shop stool, Pt. II. I enjoyed all the comments on my first post about the stool project, including the humorous ones; I'm really having fun with this. The next option I tried was a square with the seatpost in the exact center, four legs and the seat oriented on the diagonal. My reasoning was that then the platform wouldn't interfere with my legs and it would be very stable when I am on or off the stool. Here it is:. April 14, 2015 at 11:39 AM. Veritas saw filing guide.

Wild Rose Woodcraft: I Must Be Bored
http://wildrosewoodcraft.blogspot.com/2013/06/i-must-be-bored_2.html
It's about the wood. Sunday, June 2, 2013. I Must Be Bored. Because I'm not only doing spring cleaning, I'm doing spring. As if I don't have enough to do. But I want to transition from my winter shop to my summer shop. Here's my winter shop, crammed into the front of my garage, sharing space with two cars. It's a nice little one-person workspace, but I can't do work on any large items in this space. This is about a 10' x 15' space. Here's the new layout, with the truck in the driveway for the summer.

It's about the wood. Monday, July 30, 2012. My Lathe is Gaining Weight. I do miss that car tho. So what's the deal? And here's a couple of rough-turned bowl blanks, which will be set aside to dry for a few months. Nice contrast between the sapwood and heartwood. These things sure turn wet and fuzzy when they are green. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My Lathe is Gaining Weight. View my complete profile. The Literary Workshop Blog. It's about the wood. Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Bucket O' Tools Put to Work. I've just finished up a three day class with Richard Raffin. Some observations:. 1) Now I know what someone means when they use the phrase "production woodturner". Wow. This guy is fast and efficient. Not a wasted move anywhere. And he does it while making beautiful forms and shapes. And off he would go to the grinder. Here's some evidence. The pics are really low quality as I don't have my usual camera or setup. Wild Rose Woodcraft: November 2012
http://wildrosewoodcraft.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
It's about the wood. Saturday, November 3, 2012. Media Center, Post 2. My scheme is working. writing about projects really does help me move forward. I got some of the not-so-much-fun stuff done today. The TV rack mount was installed and the TV is now suspended from the back wall. It is super-adjustable in every direction. The key reason for the rack mount was to eliminate the TV from the TV stand design. What? On top of the doug fir, I used deck screws to attach a second layer, a nice piece of cherry ve...

It's about the wood. Monday, April 30, 2012. Brace and Eggbeater Storage. The pile of braces and eggbeaters under the workbench was getting to be a problem. Worse, I couldn't remember what I had and sometimes where they were. It was time for an intervention, one of the organizing kind. Let's start with the box - how big? I have a lot of Douglas Fir left over from my bench project, and this is a shop cabinet, so Doug Fir it is. It's easy to work and looks fine with a coat of oil. And if I plan thi...Once ...

Wild Rose Woodcraft: December 2012
http://wildrosewoodcraft.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
It's about the wood. Friday, December 28, 2012. Finishing The Moxon Vise. The Moxon vise project was something I tackled enthusiastically, only to let it linger in a corner for months. The reason? The 8/4 hard maple chosen for the project was set aside at the bottom back of the wood rack. A few months ago, it was moved to a corner while re-arranging the wood pile. The sight of it still provoked muttered curses even after the passage of much time. A few cobwebs were brushed aside, a rusty cog started to t...

Wild Rose Woodcraft: January 2013
http://wildrosewoodcraft.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
It's about the wood. Monday, January 7, 2013. Contrasting Wood For Rolling Pins. I usually use two different finishes, either mineral oil based or food safe vegetable based oils. The quickest and cheapest one is mineral oil with a little paraffin (the type used for canning). Melt the paraffin into the oil in the microwave, defrost setting is best. I never measure anything, but I've heard people say use about 5 parts oil to 1 part wax. Apply and leave overnight. Links to this post. View my complete profile.

Wild Rose Woodcraft: March 2013
http://wildrosewoodcraft.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
It's about the wood. Sunday, March 31, 2013. A Simple Shop Cabinet. I needed more storage, and found wall space to squeeze in a 24" x 42" cabinet in Doug Fir. I started with a 2"x10" that I resawed into 1" and 1/2" pieces. The 1" side became the dovetailed carcass and shelves, and the 1/2" side became a shiplapped back. The bottom shelf is fixed in a rabbet and the upper two are adjustable. No doors at the moment, I'm thinking about that, not sure I want them. Glue-Ups With The Right Clamps Are Boring.

Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Stickley sideboard, part 2: carcase joinery. There are 12 mortises in the carcase of this sideboard (the rear stretcher has twin mortises and the top front stretcher is dovetailed):. The tenons were all made with hand tools, sawing the shoulders, chiseling off the waste and refining them with a shoulder plane and a router plane. Because the mortises are so accurate and uniform, it goes quickly. Links to this post. Monday, April 2, 2018. Chris Schwarz made one for a Popular Woodwo...
