Pesticides cause many problems including genetic resistance. Is resistance to a pesticide that occurs after the prior generation has survived it. Prolonged usage of a pesticide on a pest results in natural selection leaving only those with resistance to reproduce. Eventually, a new generation is created, all that have inherited resistance to the pesticide. To combat this resistance, as time goes on farmers must use more pesticide in larger dosages to kill of the resistant pests. A pesticide is Persistent.

One of over 50,000 babies born with defects after Agent Orange is used in Vietnam. During the Vietnam War over 12 million gallons of herbicides were sprayed by the United States over South Vietnam during the Vietnam War to defoliate to expose hiding places, and to destroy crops planted by the Vietcong. The three herbicides that were used, Agent White, Agent Blue, and Agent Orange, destroyed 14% of the mangrove forests, and 30% of the hardwood forests. Alternatives to Pesticide Use.

Bhopal Disaster

In December 1984 at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, 36 metric tons of gas used to create pesticides erupted from an underground storage tank and caused an explosive chemical reaction. 600,000 people were exposed to the deadly methyl isocyanate gas and to the hydrogen cyanide that formed from it in the atmosphere. 2,500 people were killed outright from exposure to the gas, and 2,500 more have died since then.
