I have long been fascinated. By cider real, fresh-juice, Irish cider. Known as The Galloping Granny when she was forced to retire at 62, Charmian Orpen was the first lady in the world to be issued with a professional jockey’s licence to race against men – something she did with winning aplomb, especially on her famous horse, Dawn Run. Our cider proudly carries her name for her indomitable spirit. And when I needed peace and quiet I found myself back on the sea sometimes in small boats and in big storms.

Orpens Irish Cider | Orpens Mojito

355 ml of Orpens Cider. 355 ml of Havana Club 3 Year Old Rum. 15 ml of fresh lime juice. 25 ml of vanilla syrup. Gently muddle the mint with the lime juice in a shaker for a few seconds to release their aroma and flavour. Place the rum and vanilla syrup into the shaker with some ice. Shake for ten seconds and pour all the contents into a long glass. Top up with Orpens Cider. Garnish with a smacked mint sprig and stir. Which are natural partners to cider apple flavours. 50-75 ml of Orpens Cider. 35 ml Beefeater Gin. 35 ml Elderflower Cordial. 5 ml fresh lemon juice. Chill a large wine glass with some ice. Place all ingredients except the cider into a shaker with some ice and shake for ten seconds. Strain into the glass and finish with a healthy top up of Orpens Cider. Garnish with a decorated lemon twist. Orpens Cider 2015 / A smudge design.

70-100 ml of Orpens Cider. 3 shots of Jameson. 1 fresh red chilli. 1 shot of ginger syrup. 1 shot of lime juice. 8 dashes of Angostura Bitters. The liquid equivalent of an amuse bouche the Octopussy is delightful. Spice from the ginger and bitters mixes with freshness from the lime and tartness and effervescence from the cider. The whiskey adds a nice bite. Served in small shot glasses this will refresh your palate and leave a light lingering flavour of vanilla and lime.
