Douwe Osinga's Projects: Archean

Self-organization is a concept I picked up from a book by Stuart Kaufman. Archean is an implementation of these ideas in the form of a cellular automatum. The idea is rather simpel. Each cell contains a vector of six reals. The average vector of the neighbourhood is then calculated and multiplied by a matrix. This result is added to the vector of the cell. By mapping the six reals to rgb space and filling the matrix with random numbers, fascinating patterns spring to life. Java source code of Archena.

Douwe Osinga's Projects: Word Color

Word color calculates the color of a word by using image search. Enter a word in the box on the side and the control does an image search at google. It also sends back the urls of the thumbnails to the server. The server then goes out, fetches the images and counts the colors of the pixels. The result is the average color of that word. So, money is green, sea is blue and roses are red. Windows Program - run, enter words and see the color. Source code in Delphi. Brazil travel guide for Android.

Douwe Osinga's Artificial Life Projects

The Archean project explores self organization by multiplying the six dimensional strings in a matrix world with a transformation matrix, a little like Conways game of life, but then in full color. From a random pattern something more ordered emerges. Different every time! Caerfai is a first attempt at simulating chemical reactions. The model is much too simple to be useful, but it gives some nice images and animations. Source is included and offers a nice starting point for similar endevours.

Worldsizer shows the major parts of the world on a map sized according to their GDP, Population, Military spending etc. The thing is done in Flash and the graphics are done by me, badly.
