Ultimate Questions - God is God. Pentecost 23a, Nov. 16,2014 (Zeph. 1:7,12-18; I Thessalonians 5:1-11; Matthew 25:14-30. But there are questions that do matter: ultimately. I know that we care about some things, some people. We care about our kids, our grandkids. We give of ourselves so that they have all kinds of opportunities, a variety of experiences. We bend over backwards, work over-time, make sacrifices so that they can have such experiences. Most of that is good. Who else can do that, here and now?

Seeing Jesus in the Ordinary. Pentecost 6b15, July 5, 2015 (II Samuel 5:1-10; II Corinthians 12:2-10; Mark 6:1-13. Focusing on Mark 6:1-13. Have you ever seen Jesus' work or teach? Think about that right now for a moment (Pause). Any of you – let's see hands. He had to say, "Yes". She replied further, "And has God taken care of us all of our lives with more than enough to eat and drink, with friends and opportunities for our children, with a roof over our head? I watched as she joyfully served and gave o...

On this night of nights Jesus asks the earliest disciples, "Do you know what I have done to you? On this night of nights, the night before we, in our feeble but so often genuine attempts to commemorate Jesus' suffering and death, he may still be asking us, "Do we know what he has done to us? Do we know – really know? Do I know what she has done for me, to me, my mother? Posted by Pastor Tim.

Good Friday B, April 3, 2015 (Preaching John 19:1-42). I remember a few years ago – a number of our youth had a sleep over at the church from Maundy Thursday through Good Friday. They were present for the Maundy Thursday service. They quietly and carefully observed as at the climax of the service the altar was stripped. They were still and listened as the lector read. Psalm 22 – "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Innocently I asked, "Why, what's wrong? Her response, "Just come and see.". Today we...

John 1:18 (Christmas 2b15, January 4, 2015). At other times we see things that are far less than beautiful, that signal great difficulty, which evoke pain and compassion, that may even be horrific. Have you seen some of those "things"? We visit a hospital or hospice to be with friends or family who are struggling as the result of a stroke, cancer or ALS. We may then wonder – where is God? To be precise, I am talking about God's Own Son, in the writer John's words, the Word become flesh, coming to our nei...
