Egan in 1998, and the first unit to be opened was the training centre. The aim was to train caregivers for work in the Hospice and the community. This was followed in 2003 with 4 wards to accommodate 22 inpatients, an outpatients department and an administration block. In 2004, another ward for 10 patients was opened. Whilst much of the activity of the Hospice is focussed on keeping HIV patients healthy, and able to live full lives, a proportion of patients will inevitably get chronically ill. The burden of care for households with chronically ill patients is great in a resource-limited environment.
