our old stone home

something about a stone house has always captured my heart. In the Summer of 2009, my family of four moved into one of our own. We are in the most northern part of New York on the banks of the Grasse River. Our town was established in 1802 by intrepid pioneers who laughed in the face of mosquitoes. There is a small block of marble over the front door inscribed "1843". Welcome to Our Old Stone Home!

our old stone home: February 2011

http://ouroldstonehome.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 11, 2011. We are lucky enough to host a Sweetheart's Dinner tonight. This is the time of winter to insist on the kind of evening event that will stun the doldrums right out of one's system. A fancy dinner at our old stone home with other couples falls into that category quite nicely. Over the last 168 years, there have been other parties at this house. I plan to throw a few more while we are blessed enough to reside here. With Baked Garlic Mashed Potatoes on the side. Above is the kitchen.

our old stone home: October 2011

http://ouroldstonehome.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 18, 2011. The sun has awakened me these past two mornings. I always rub my eyes in wonder when I look from my bedroom window, but especially when the last days of autumn are upon us. Monday, October 10, 2011. A perfect day for a new sidewalk. This is the kind of day it was; a rare day of autumn warmth, sun, breezes, blue skies, and cement. Those kinds of days don't come along very often. One must seize them when they do. Tossed on their wellies and grabbed their rake or shovel of choice.

our old stone home: love people, not things

http://ouroldstonehome.blogspot.com/2011/11/love-people-not-things.html

Friday, November 4, 2011. Love people, not things. After the guest room was furnished with an antique brass bed, a night stand, a bedside lamp, an area rug, and little else, The Quest for a suitable wardrobe began. This was over a year ago. We scoured local auctions, flea markets, roadside sales, and antique shops all over the North country and even beyond. Unless we were willing to part with a large amount of moolah, the wardrobe-thing didn't look promising. But as you can see, our determination prevailed.

our old stone home: May 2011

http://ouroldstonehome.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 5, 2011. Happy Mother's Day around here. This was the view of the side porch last week; the day we dined there for the the first time this season. We shared a pasta dinner with our friends down the street. Let's just call them the 1942 Gang. They know who they are. While we slurped up authentic Italian sauce and munched on salad, the river churned away. Some crazy person on a kayak took this shot. Somebody needs to remind her not to venture out in such fast water. I'm good with that.

our old stone home: April 2011

http://ouroldstonehome.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 21, 2011. You can bet your Easter bonnet that there is plenty going on over here at our old stone home. The cedar shakes are being installed on the side porch, much to my glee. They will be stained a pale version of the rest of the siding, and then trimmed in white. I can envision it now. While I am indoors envisioning things where it is 68 degrees, my faithful guys are bundled up against the cold. They rock my world, I tell you. With balloons and tropical color and had us a birthday party.

Old School Days

Monday, April 5, 2010. It's a long while since I posted a blog. We've still been busy on the house but I guess not in such milestones as we had when the builders were here. Even so, I would like to keep a diary of the work we are doing so am planning to keep up the postings. Here's my Simnel cake. I made one last year as a present for our relatives in Wales who we stayed with over Easter. I made another one this year as a present and as David commented that he would like to try Simnel cake one ye...Last ...

Sunday, April 19, 2009. The Environment: Household Cleaners. As Christians we should be good stewards of the resources that God has given us. That includes our environment. We benefit from taking care of the earth and now, with all the "green" products, it's even easier. I've been looking for an environmentally friendly household cleaner and here are some that I have tried:. Monday, April 6, 2009. Book Review: The Great Omission. our old stone home

Thursday, March 22, 2012. Here at our old stone home, there are things to do. We've been given a gift of spring weather, way ahead of our usually miserably-slow-to-warm North country schedule. You see, it has thrown me off kilter. But no. Not this year. We've been up to our ears in sun, summer-hot temperatures, and feelings of general disbelief that such a thing could come to us. Thanks, Mysterious Weather. But you are not to be trusted. I am still keeping my boots and mittens handy. As for the table, it...

Antsy to do something on Molly, but pressed as I have been by work, I thought I'd show some pictures. That's always easy and makes me feel like I'm working. My passenger is Tristan, who's seven. He desperately wanted to ride to Molly's new home at the distillery (www.hardtimesdistillery), but I only had one seat bolted in. Curious...
