The first of many | out. living.
https://outlivingblog.wordpress.com/2014/07/28/the-first-of-many
The first of many. I always get pretty excited to show visiting friends and family the desert wasteland we live on the edge of out here. It’s a perhaps silly pride of something that’s not at all mine but that is oh-so profoundly special. The sharing last weekend was the best ever. Introducing Zazie, who’s been itching to get into the backcountry for two and a half weeks now. Walk a shockingly short distance from roads or trails, though, and it’s some of the most tranquil country around. I just returned f...

Fold ramblin’ and wingate canyon headin’. I don’t think I’ve ever come to so many places in one trip where I said, “no way this goes” and then, just barely, it does. I laughed more than once recalling Dave’s story. Of running around up here in the dark. For the time of year water was surprisingly scarce. While Choprock not far north had received significant rain in the past month, there had been zero further south. So it goes in canyon country. 8230;and back to the wingate…. Back to solid streambed….

Some thoughts on the Sigma DP2 Quattro (and comparison with Merrill). I had a chance to try out the new Sigma DP2 Quattro last week, which is the first of the successors to the DP Merrill line. I also had something else much more exciting going on last week, so camera testing was pretty low on the priority list. Sigma DP2Q ISO 200 f2.8 1/500 Daylight WB. DP2Q, f2.8 1/500 ISO 200 AWB. DP2M, f2.8 1/500 ISO 200 AWB. DP2Q f4 1/60 ISO 200 AWB 2 sec delay resting on a railing. DP2Q f3.2 1/250 ISO 800. DP2Q f4 ...

There might not be a place where the old “39′ cliffs don’t show up on a topo” is more appropriate. This is hard country to negotiate. After about halfway up crossing drainages is next to impossible so you better hope you ended up between two good ones…. We did, but it wasn’t looking good in a couple places…. Things get a little easier on top, but not much. Blooming before it even has leaves…. To make a proper loop we decided to shortcut across what used to be Bullfrog and Halls Bay. Lower Escalante canyons and flash flood packrafting | out. living.

Lower Escalante canyons and flash flood packrafting. I guess that living in Colorado, this is the time of year that I’m supposed to go to the mountains, but I just keep heading west this summer. No crowds, hanging gardens going bonkers, and being in a place in a time you aren’t supposed to be there keeps bringing me back. On the morning of day 2 we took our time drinking coffee to a good 45 minutes of near-continuous lightning. 8230;and a few sprinkles…. Some normally-submerged narrows…. The chance to se...

BikeRunBeer: Redbud Valley Nature Preserve
http://bikerunbeer.blogspot.com/2015/01/redbud-valley-nature-preserve.html
Saturday, January 10, 2015. Redbud Valley Nature Preserve. A work errand brought me to Northeast Tulsa last week, and used it as an excuse to visit the Redbud Valley Nature Preserve in Catoosa. A stopped train just South of the preserve sent me on a long detour through narrow winding roads more reminiscent of West Virginia than the greater Tulsa area. I finally arrived at the parking area with about 45 minutes until closing time. Pics taken with my Canon S100. September 12, 2016 at 12:20 AM. 8217;s spons...
BikeRunBeer: January 2015

Wednesday, January 28, 2015. The Arkansas River isn't much of a river this time of year. Last Wednesday was the worst I've seen it; scattered puddles with no discernible movement at all. It's eerie to walk out on the flat rocks that form the river's bed, the same bed I've seen carry over 50,000 cubic feet if water per second, and not hear the slightest trickle. By yesterday, running water had returned. Both pics were taken from the bottom of the access ramp by the pedestrian bridge. I can't believe it to...

Marked by lack of plan, order or direction; having clarity or intelligibility. Saturday, March 16, 2013. Joy in the Journey -. Couple weeks ago, I get this email from my Dad. He is doing a little “prepping” for the backpack trip. Resurrecting the old Whisperlite stove from 25-ish years ago. Michael Card had an album back in the day, a particular favorite of mine, called Joy in the Journey. The stove episode just made me think how fun it was to do the journey and to laugh all along the way. Car camping en...

Marked by lack of plan, order or direction; having clarity or intelligibility. Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Telling stories impassions people, causes action. Action that leads to more stories, and so the circle continues. Lately, I have read a number of adventure stories. It started somewhat with semi-rad. And lead into Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley. And Abbey’s Desert Solitaire. And most recently Brendan Leonnard’s The New American Road Trip Mix Tape. At the base of the dam:. Fortunately, the desert...

Returning to familiar places differently, whether by different access points or as part of a completely different trip is always worthwhile, but revisiting some of those places with Zazie has been tremendously rewarding. Setting up a basecamp minimizes hauling the required extra gear for most of the trip and also has the advantage of a low penalty for extra tasty and heavy food and beverage.
