Sull'etimologia del termine "Pacentro" si hanno scarse notizie, la la leggenda vuole che derivi da Pacino, un antico agglomerato urbano di origine latina, fondata dall'eroe troiano Pacinus, che combatté al fianco di Enea per poi lasciare le rive del Tevere e addentrarsi nel Sannio.
