Redux: A Tutorial on How To Build a Coke Can Stove for Hiking, Bushcraft and Camping. I was just looking over my Coke can camping stove tutorial and thought it might be a good time to post it again - it is such an easy stove to make, and lots of fun. Okay, following up on a post about emergency preparedness. I saw a pile of Fondu Fuel bottles containing denatured alcohol. Boiling water is obviously important when camping or hiking or during a power outage. With one you can make hot drinks, heat meals...

Mungo Is Still Mad About Wool Blankets. So this is a rewrite of an older post. I'm going to start writing more again soon - but with the cold winter upon us here in Ontario, I wanted to share my Wool Blankets post again. Stay warm out there! So instead, I occasionally stop in at the neighbourhood thrift shop and browse the rack at the back of the floor where you can pick up used comforters, sheets and towels. Nearly every time I go there, there are one or two blankets waiting for me. A backpack can be qu...

http://www.mungosaysbah.com/2010/12/20-minute-knife-sharpening-board.html
20 Minute Knife Sharpening Board Tutorial. This little project should take you about 20 minutes at most. Mors Kochanski recommends making one of these in his book 'Bushcraft' (of which I have a signed copy! I had all the ingredients needed in my basement: 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper, double-sided carpet tape, a scrap of wood for mounting the sandpaper, a cutting board (another scrap of wood), a pencil and a piece of paper. Then I carefully and evenly adhered the sandpaper roughly positioned over the w...

Caledonian Tracking: Cappadocia and ancient preppers.

A blog about a Scotsmans journey as a tracker and backwoodsman who is expanding his skill sets. Friday, April 12, 2013. Cappadocia and ancient preppers. After about 20 days traveling we found ourselves arriving in Goreme. We arrived at night and it felt like we had landed on another planet. The silhouettes of the buildings with the lights shining from the windows was very eerie. While we were there we went to visit the ancient underground cities in Derinkuyu. This really flies in the face of hording load...

Here are a couple of spoons I carved from a single chunk of white ash (fraxinus americana) I gathered from the park behind where I live in Toronto. The already-dead tree had collapsed in a windstorm last year. To finish them, I soaked them in olive oil for a day. The tree was likely the victim of the Emerald Ash Borer. I used my Gransfors-Bruks Small Forest Axe to cut up the log, and my Mora ' Classic Original 1. Well, I've just discovered that Mora has restarted making and is selling the Mora 510. From ...

http://www.mungosaysbah.com/2009/07/desperately-cleaning-my-msr-dragonfly.html
Desperately Cleaning my MSR Dragonfly Stove and Then Realizing I'd Plugged It Into the Fuel Bottle Wrong To Begin With. It is a great stove, it can simmer or roar loudly on full bore. It can be very noisy, but I've not got any complaints about that. The arms fold out and spring-load back to the element, to allow it to store down small. The arms keep the burner off of the ground to help insulate the unit, and the arms fold over to make a pot holder. I pulled the fuel pump out of the fuel cannister, filled...
