Paddling on the Lower Willamette #4 Post Flooding. The current is still quite strong as well, but much less turbulent. You can see yourself in this video that demonstrates a cormorant and a gull using what I like to call WRT, or Willamette Rapid Transit. Riding on flotsam and logs (WRT) appears to be a popular way to get downriver in a somewhat quick manner. It’s faster than walking anyway. I can’t wait for the water level to go down more so that I can see what else has happened during the flooding!

East Island | Paddling Meditation

I usually can’t get very close to mergansers before they fly off, but recently they’ve been a little less shy. I think breeding season is coming soon, and I’ve seen a lot more males, especially around the females. I haven’t seen any mating rituals yet, but I’m looking forward to it! This group is lounging on a small gravel bar between Ross Island and East Island. A male Common Merganser, followed closely by a pair of females.
