Paddling Otaku: Happy Holidays From Paddling Otaku
http://www.paddlingotaku.com/2014/12/happy-holidays-from-paddling-otaku.html
Tuesday, December 23, 2014. Happy Holidays From Paddling Otaku. It has been a very different year for me. I am currently working very hard to build an outdoor program for a major outdoor retailer. The by-product of that is I have very little time to write. I am hoping that changes in the spring when we are up and running full steam. But in the meantime, I wanted to talk about a few things that are going on. And this is the year before. I am excited that someone came up with a replacement for Royalex.
Paddling Otaku: The Practical Minimalist.
http://www.paddlingotaku.com/2014/07/the-practical-minimalist.html
Friday, July 18, 2014. For me, my minimalism started out of divorce. Shortly after I found myself alone in an apartment in lower manhattan - before I owned a kayak - While Desperate for an end to sadness, I discovered Feng Shui. Today - nearly 20 years later - I consider myself a practical minimalist. I have made up that term so let me explain what that is. The past year or so I have spent a lot of time at a couple of specific subreddits at the website reddit. I actually own dishes (okay, only 8 dishes a...
Paddling Otaku: The best breakfast on the Inside Passage.
http://www.paddlingotaku.com/2013/07/the-best-breakfast-on-inside-passage.html
Monday, July 1, 2013. The best breakfast on the Inside Passage. This is a story I tell people a lot about the Inside Passage trip, that I realized I have never told here. This is the beach where I point ashore and say 'this way the bears are going to get us' then I point out to the water, 'and this way the water is going to get us! The morning of the 3 am start had been no different, so by noon, when we got to the beach north of Eldrid light we were hungry. We sat under the tarp going through food ba...
Paddling Otaku: Tips for outdoor educators
http://www.paddlingotaku.com/2015/08/tips-for-outdoor-educators.html
Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Tips for outdoor educators. Having spent the last year, working hand in hand with many instructors, I have given a lot of thought to what makes a good outdoor educator, as well as "best practices" for outdoor educators. In no specific order, here are some of my thoughts. The boy scouts - who I am not a huge fan of, but that is a topic for another post - have an expression. Be prepared. There is nothing more true for an outdoor educator. Have your shit wired. In large sizes, regar...
Paddling Otaku: A tale of three fleece, and a primaloft jacket
http://www.paddlingotaku.com/2013/02/a-tale-of-three-fleece-and-primaloft.html
Saturday, February 2, 2013. A tale of three fleece, and a primaloft jacket. When I am doing overnight trips from my kayak I get into routines. One of my most consistent routine is the last thing I do before getting into my kayak in the morning, and the first thing I do after getting out of my kayak is take of cold, wet paddling gear and put on a warm, dry fleece. Self care is a very important thing. It worked well, but I wanted something that would do better in the wind. I Decided that it was time fo...

John's Kayak Adventures: 2015.02.261 - Canada Day Paddle
http://johnkayak.blogspot.com/2015/07/201502261-canada-day-paddle.html
Kayaking Victoria and the We(s)t Coast. Wednesday, July 1, 2015. 201502.261 - Canada Day Paddle. Louise and I went for our annual Canada Day Paddle on the Gorge. Every year, Gorge Road is closed for a mile-long block party. We don't usually see much wild life on our Canada Day paddles - most of it finds something better to do than hang around with a few thousand humans while they make music, eat food and play road hockey - but we did see something fitting for this day: Canada geese. YTD: 8.34 km. Paddle ...
John's Kayak Adventures: February 2015
http://johnkayak.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Kayaking Victoria and the We(s)t Coast. Sunday, February 15, 2015. 201501.260 - Back In the Paddle Again. Paddling my kayak wasn't so bad, but it became quite a struggle to get in and out of my boat, never mind the travails of loading, unloading and carrying it around. Last July, my knee finally reached its metaphorical breaking point, and clearly brave stoicism was not getting me very far. After an assessment with a physiotherapist, I was diagnosed with patella dislocation. Did I remember my waterbottle?
John's Kayak Adventures: March 2013
http://johnkayak.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Kayaking Victoria and the We(s)t Coast. Friday, March 29, 2013. 201303.247 - Sunny Day. The weather this March has not been great. Rainy, windy, generally blah days. But today it's 13 degrees and sunny, a gorgeous spring day, and a good Friday by any definition. The sluggish start to our paddling year continues as Louise is struggling with some small joint aches and pains. But smiles come easy on a gorgeous day like this even if you aren't feeling one hundred percent. We paddled by the local swans. With ...
John's Kayak Adventures: September 2013
http://johnkayak.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Kayaking Victoria and the We(s)t Coast. Sunday, September 8, 2013. 201309.253 - Kayak for a Cure 2013. Louise and I hit Willows Beach early this morning to join the 2013 edition of Kayak For A Cure. About 50 kayakers by my guess hit the water, some old hands at kayaking, but others were first-time newbies, and many were cancer survivors so it's a short, easy paddle to Cadboro Bay and back. But first things first. And first I get my picture taken with Marty the Marmot. We rounded Cattle Point. Pictures Fr...

OCEANPAX Paddle / Run / Be: Celtic, cool, and "Keen"...the Munro.
http://oceanpax.blogspot.com/2015/08/celtic-cool-and-keenthe-munro.html
Saturday, August 01, 2015. Celtic, cool, and "Keen".the Munro. As we enter the last month of our year and a half locum in Scotland, before returning home to Canada for a little while, it was time to get some elevation. Mmm.yes! Is the most easterly "Munro", a Scottish mountain over 3000 feet. The trailhead was a ninety minute drive to the north, through the lovely Angus Glens. History permeates these hills. Isolated Mount Keen promised solitude, wide open spaces, and a view to be savoured. Leaving the we...
OCEANPAX Paddle / Run / Be: Rock hopping the delightful and sublime mysteries...of castles and caves.
http://oceanpax.blogspot.com/2015/07/rock-hopping-delightful-and-sublime.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. Rock hopping the delightful and sublime mysteries.of castles and caves. Rock hopping: close quarter paddling amidst rocks and skerries, weaving and manoeuvring through narrow passages and caves. Castles: large buildings, usually very old, strongly fortified against attack, with thick walls, battlements, and towers. Caves: hollow or natural passages under or into the earth. Is one such castle that occupies a lonely and rugged promontory, near the village of Sandend. In 1560, the cas...

Kayaking Victoria and the We(s)t Coast. Saturday, July 13, 2013. 201306.250 - 2013 MEC Victoria Paddlefest. You couldn't ask for a better day for a Paddlefest. Well, you could, but that would be greedy. In the midst of an incredible run of sunny weather, Louise, Paula, Bernie (yes, even Bernie! And I arrived at Willows Beach for the 2013 version of the MEC Victoria Paddlefest. And it was a picture-perfect day, unlike last year's " Fog-fest. There were already a lot of kayaks in the water when we arrived.

Paddling On
For those who are unafraid to see faith as a trip, who want to travel in God's mainstream, and who welcome questions and adventure along the way. Wednesday, August 19, 2015. No Church's Hope Lies Inside Its Walls! I mean both the literal walls of a church facility or campus and the figurative containment of the people, the leadership, the systems, the traditions, and the processes that define any particular congregation. One old canoeist/kayaker's opinion.I'll see you around the next bend in the river.

Paddling on Dialysis for Kidney Health
Paddling on Dialysis for Kidney Health. In 2010, to celebrate my tenth year of a wonderful life on dialysis I sort of got in shape and canoed 225 miles with the Grand River Expedition 2010. It was an incredible journey that couldn't have happened without my family and many dear friends. Since I started my first blog, Tasty Kidney Pie. In 2001, I have tried to, and hope to continue to, inspire dialysis patients and others living with chronic illnesses to get outdoors and live an active and fruitful life.

Paddling Orkney and beyond
Paddling Orkney and beyond. A paddler's journey through all things paddlesport. Friday, 31 August 2012. A little bit special. Setting off from Sandside as dusk fell. We did not mean to go on a dusk/night paddle but by the time we were organised and on the water (OK, by the time the Keeper of Voles was on the water…) it was almost sunset. The wind had dropped away and there was a chill in the air. As we set off, the moon was obvious in the sky. Colin paddles under the moon. Paddling under the moon.

Friday, March 2, 2018. What is 70,000 words and 244 pages long? As of today the answer to that is my currently untitled Trip planning book. The bulk of the writing is done, there is a photo shoot in the coming weeks for one of the many sections. And I hope to have it on iTunes and Amazon for Kindle by may. I am super excited about this project and it is the reason I haven't been writing here. I will unfortunately not be teaching at the Charleston outdoor festival this year. Maybe next year. Major storms ...
