The Parson Woodforde Society was founded in 1968 by the Revd Canon L Rule Wilson and may be said to have two main aims:. To extend and develop knowledge of James Woodforde's life and the society in which he lived. To provide opportunity for fellow enthusiasts to meet together - from time to time - in places associated with the diarist, and to exchange news and views. The Diary has never before been published in full. It first became known in the 1920s, when John Beresford. Edited a five-volume abridgement, The Diary of a Country Parson. Of the original Beresford edition has been published (also called The Diary of a Country Parson. In a variety of formats, and has been very popular. Indeed, it has probably introduced more people to the Diary than has any other edition, and is by far the easiest edition to find in secondhand bookshops. Edited by W N Hargreaves-Mawdsley.

James Woodforde was born in Somerset. In 1740, the son of the Rector of Ansford and Vicar of Castle Cary. He was an undergraduate at New College, Oxford. And after taking his degree returned to Somerset where he held various curacies. On his father's death he failed to succeed to the Somerset livings and returned to Oxford as a Fellow and Sub-Warden of New College. In 1774 he obtained a college living at Weston Longville in Norfolk. Visit our blog for more information. Website design working order.
