Meet Master Wood, a loyal Royalist and Mistress Bowden a widow. Explore everyday life in the Stuart period through their eyes. The year is 1651 and Parliament is triumphant and the King is dead, yet life must go on. Where do their loyalties lie? What does the future hold for them? Life has not changed as much as might at first be imagined and so many of the learning opportunities of the Tudor period may be used. But the wider world has changed. See some of the skills of blackwork and stumpwork.

The costumes below was developed from a portrait of Lady Ackland (17 c) at Killerton House (NT) to support their living history days and the child’s dress for their late Victorian school room. Currently we are working on Tudor and Georgian costumes and training volunteers at a site to develop its own costume making team. Can provide workshops for all ages in:. They have experienced and survived the change and upheavals of the time. From their earliest lives during the tumult of the Reformation, at the end of Henry VIII’s reign, to the threat of the Spanish Armada only 2 years before, through times of plague and the famine, the glories of the great and the suffering of the poor they have seen all these in their life times.
