Puerto Varas and Santiago. A Walk on Volcán Osorno. The view from Puerto Varas is dominated by Volcán Osorno. The 8,700-foot volcano across Lago Llanquihue to the east (I think "Osorno" is Spanish for "Fuji"). It's one of several stratovolcanoes. On February 28th we flew from Puerto Montt to Santiago and checked into the Hotel Orly. Carla, Tom, Peg, and Ron flew home from there while Pamela, Jim, Bobby, and JC flew 2,000 miles west to Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

Puerto Varas and Santiago. The next day, February 19th, we visited the glacier face by boat (see below). Then we explored the area on foot and two diehards (Jim and Tom) climbed with Erick up. What turned out to be an incredibly steep trail toward Mirador Ferrier. Their efforts were rewarded with a stunning panorama of Lago Grey, Glaciar Grey, and two huge massifs (Cerro Paine Grande and Cuernos del Paine) across the lake to the northeast. Transit to Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas.

Cahuella is a 50-foot wooden motor cruiser built in the traditional fishing boat style of the region and is perfect for cruising the spectacular fjords and archipelagoes of the Golfo de Ancud. Or download a map. Sea Lion Colony at Fiordo Cahuelmó. After lunch, when the tide came up enough, we took a Zodiac ride up the Rio Vodudahue to visit the Fundo Vodudahue. Farm in Parque Pumalin.

Puerto Varas and Santiago. After lunch we headed towards Isla Cheniao and walked up on the cliff for some great views of the gulf. Then we cruised among the islands in the early evening sunlight and picked up an overnight mooring at the port of Mechuque. We went ashore for a walk through the town and a visit to the funky Museo Historico Don Paulino. Miguel purchased oysters in town and we had a feast back on board Cahuella. Puñihuil Penguin Colony. Puerto Varas and Santiago. We spent the first few days in Buenos Aires, staying in the Palermo Soho section at 1555 Malabia House. Estancia La Porteña. On our last day in Buenos Aires, February 9th, we traveled northwest to San Antonio de Areco. Home of the famous annual gaucho festival. After a brief stop at the Draghi Silver Museum, we spent the day at Estancia La Porteña. An historic property founded by great-grandfather of the famous author Ricardo Güiraldes.
