Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 19 December 2016. This is the last photo of him at the CS Lewis Square in East Belfast looking at the stone table sculpture. We are left with pictures and memories which will help to ease the hurt, as will nature and the great outdoors, plus, " A wee Maudes and I could force down a latte! I got back to birding at WOW on Thursday and we had over 30 species including a good array of waders and ducks. We also had a grey heron. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: February 2016
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 29 February 2016. Great to be back in the North East for another yomp round some excellent bird spots. We started with a visit to Newbiggin for a walk with the family and were rewarded with Mediterranean g. Ull and an Oystercatcher. With a sense of dignity as it posed on a tombstone in the church. All the following photos were taken by my friend and birding mate David who was experimenting with his new camera - a Christmas present from his wife. We moved to the Ca...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: 2017 New year new lists
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2017/01/2017-new-year-new-lists.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 2 January 2017. 2017 New year new lists. The year has got off to a slow start as I did not set out on New Years Day to do a bird list. I spent January 1 in and around the garden and Bangor West and today was spent on a drive to Tollymore Forest Park and a walk. Nevertheless some good birds were spotted. The garden produced all that I expected including long-tailed tit and blackcap. West Bangor patch list: 19. 4 January 2017 at 00:05. North Down Coastal Path. 2016 ...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: November 2016
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Thursday, 24 November 2016. With a title like that I should get lots of hits from people looking for a cartoon character, but NO, this is WOW frozen for the first time since I started volunteering there in June 2015. This meant that birds were at a premium. We struggled to reach 20 species and apart from 180 curlew. And about 25 lapwing. There were no waders. The only duck was teal. Teal flock on the only bit of open water. The goldfinch "charm" totalled 30. 2016 list is ...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: October 2016
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Sunday, 23 October 2016. The magic of Islay. Saturday saw me on Islay for the second time. Two years ago I visited in September and went to the Oa reserve. This time the plan was to go to Lough Gruinart to see the geese flock. The sight and sound of 30000 barnacle geese. Then a bus up to Loch Gruinart RSPB reserve which takes about 25 minutes. There are barnacle geese. Missed the other 37980. There's some of them. A few more and their Canadian friends. Clearly these are d...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Friday, 3 June 2016. Au revoir mes amis. Que sera, sera whatever will be will be,. We're going to gay Paree,. Que sera, sera. Last proper post for a while as we are off to join the army for three weeks, the Green and White army that is, or as they say in France "L'armee vert et blanc". Things have been quiet since I last posted with a couple of visits to WOW where we now have common terns. Looking like breeding and black-headed gull. The black-headed gull family. Subscrib...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: July 2016
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Monday, 11 July 2016. After three weeks plus in France I returned home to a much changed patch. No birdsong, everything keeping out of sight, rampant greenery and very few additions to the patch lists. Nevertheless in the words of Edith Piaf " Non, je ne regrette rien". The passion, fervour and sheer excitement of the Euros more than made up for a scarcity of birds. The trip was not entirely wasted birdwise as I racked up manx shearwater. And eight griffon vultures. I am ...

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: Islay 2 and ton up
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2016/11/islay-2-and-ton-up.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Tuesday, 1 November 2016. Islay 2 and ton up. First a few more shots from Islay taken by Horace Reid. Who is clearly a better photographer than I am and also has a better camera which he knows how to use. He was there on the Friday. The pictures are superb, what is lacking is the soundscape which was equally good. I never thought to take a video, but I suspect it would be a letdown. WOW on Thursday had 29 species and at long last a peregrine. We also had a young razorbilll.

Bangor West Patchwork Challenge: September 2016
http://bangorwestndcp.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html
Bangor West Patchwork Challenge. Thursday, 29 September 2016. WOW and Castle Espie. WOW continues to be a pleasure to be at, despite missing out on the Baird's sandpiper. Last week saw reed cutting taking place but I still managed 4 new species plus a little stint. This week. The highlights were kingfisher, little egret, meadow pipit and scaup. Plus good numbers of ducks and waders drifting in for the winter. There are no shelduck yet and in three visits in eight days I have seen common terns. I am a reti...
