It’s empathy, not sympathy, that’s needed in Voter ID cases — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/08/its-empathy-not-sympathy-thats-needed-in-voter-id-cases

It’s empathy, not sympathy, that’s needed in Voter ID cases. August 18, 2012. This column originally appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on Aug. 17, 2012. A week ago I wrote that the state’s voter identification law had proven in Commonwealth Court to be morally indefensible. Photo ID to vote, Simpson wrote, “is a reasonable, nondiscriminatory, non-severe burden when viewed in the broader context of the widespread use of photo ID in daily life.”. And his finding that the law is “nondiscriminatory...

A great excuse to light the dynamite — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/05/a-great-excuse-to-light-the-dynamite

A great excuse to light the dynamite. May 5, 2012. This column appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on May 4, 2012. The notion that you should never waste a good crisis is virtually political dogma, and for obvious reasons. In normal times, public bureaucracies change slowly, if at all. The public must be convinced. Opponents must be overcome. Ideas must be tested and debated. But in a crisis, well, the usual rules don’t apply. You can do big things fast. Or, put another way, much of the creative destru...

Hope & reality at Sunoco refinery — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/05/hope-reality-at-sunoco-refinery

Hope & reality at Sunoco refinery. May 12, 2012. This column appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on May 11, 2012. At the risk of sounding callous, my first reaction at hearing that Philadelphia’s Sunoco refinery might close was excitement. Yes, it would mean job losses, as many as 900 good blue-collar positions, which are all too rare in this city in the first place. But this is, sadly, a wistful fantasy. The far more likely reality is that, if the refinery does shut down, Philadelphia will be burd...

More park, less way — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/08/more-park-less-way

More park, less way. August 4, 2012. This column originally appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on August 4, 2012. The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is rather like Philadelphia as a whole: There’s a lot to love about the place, but the sight of so much squandered potential can be hard to take. Of course, to get to the park from the new $150 million Barnes Foundation museum, tourists first must walk past makeshift homeless encampments. You see this sort of schizophrenia up and down the Parkway. You emer...

Delinquency Map — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/delinquency-map

I have spent several years extensively. Philadelphia’s delinquent property tax epidemic. Below you’ll find an interactive map of property owners that the city considered delinquent as of April 2012. For a more robust version of this same map – one including search functionality – please visit PlanPhilly. Mostly a blog about Philadelphia, but maybe other urban places as well. City politics, city people, city streets. Your host is Patrick Kerkstra. But I do have a question for @asthompson. Fact-packed back...

Soda tax bubbles up again — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/07/soda-tax-bubbles-up-again

Soda tax bubbles up again. July 28, 2012. Persistence is a too-rare quality in political leaders. Even more than the rest of us, politicians hate to lose. Once burned, elected officials more often than not stop risking political capital on the losing cause. So it’s more refreshing than an ice-cold soda to see that Mayor Nutter, though beaten in 2010 and again in 2011, still has not given up his goal of passing a tax on sugary drinks. That’s a group that hits a lot of different political pressure po...

City Hall’s reboot — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/07/city-halls-reboot

City Hall’s reboot. July 17, 2012. This column originally appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on July 14, 2012. Dysfunction in Philadelphia’s City Hall comes in many flavors. There are the outdated union contracts and their burdensome work rules, the still-strong influence of the Democratic machine, and the pay-to-play culture, which is diminished but not dead. Obviously this wastes time and money, and it leads to innumerable errors and omissions in the records. After spending $17 million on police sur...

Archives — City Junto

By Post: (Last 50 articles). A city of jobs Meccas, and deserts. Trees, magical trees. It’s empathy, not sympathy, that’s needed in Voter ID cases. Voter ID shown to be morally indefensible. More park, less way. Soda tax bubbles up again. Center City to midtown in just over a half hour. City Hall’s reboot. The best mayor Portland never had. Philadelphia’s great reckoning. The shocking resilience of AVI. In Praise of the Parking Authority. Seriously. Speaking softly without a stick. The $38,920 rubber mat.

Trees, magical trees — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/2012/08/trees-magical-trees

Trees, magical trees. August 31, 2012. This column first appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on August 31, 2012. I fell in love with my West Philadelphia neighborhood in a single afternoon. On a whim, I took a walk from the heart of Center City out to 50th and Baltimore, and spent hours weaving in and out of the largely residential blocks along the way. I couldn’t get over how green everything was. Trees planted in past generations aged and died and were not replaced. So, bit by bit, the city has g...

Tips — City Junto

http://cityjunto.com/tips

Tell us. And by us I mean one guy. You should really look into. Now click the button. Mostly a blog about Philadelphia, but maybe other urban places as well. City politics, city people, city streets. Your host is Patrick Kerkstra. A freelance journalist. For the time being, most posts (like pretty much all) are reprints of columns and stories I've written various publications. Maybe someday it will be more bloggish. Also, Junto means this. But I do have a question for @asthompson. So what this means is t...

Patrick Keogh's Weblog

Patrick Keogh’s Weblog. The unsolved question of online photo sharing. December 19, 2012. The question of where to share photos online has become increasingly complex. Right now I don’t have a definitive answer. Let me explain. No Does it replace Flickr? No, because it still does not provide the rich environment for image classification and presentation that Flickr has. Maybe it will never achieve this, as the design centre for Flickr is much more specialist than Google . There is another category of ima...

hello

September 7, 2014. Glenwood Springs and Hanging Lake with the Morrills. For Memorial Day Weekend we went to Glenwood Springs, Colorado with the Morrills. Our families get along SO well so it makes traveling with them not only is it super fun, it's also a breeze. The highlight was going on the 2 mile uphill hike to Hanging Lake. It exceeded my expectations and the girls were such happy little hikers for such an uphill hike. This was one of those happy / perfect weekends. Sunday, September 07, 2014.
