Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Well, it's been quite awhile since I posted here. However, that's not because I haven't been reading! In recent months I've reread the works of James Clavell. And several of Terry Pratchett's Discworld. I attempted to read. By Valerio Massimio Manfredi which I thoroughly enjoyed; in fact I've ordered another of his novels from the library! That said what I absolutely enjoyed the most about this book was the following, taken from the acknowledgements:. The stories are moderately e...

The Bookshelf: March 2007

http://paul-willcox.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 12, 2007. The Children of Men' by P.D. James (1992). I borrowed this from the library after seeing and enjoying the recent movie. Starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine). The book is very different to the movie but raises similar issues. The Day of the Triffids'. The Death of Grass'. Etc) and this fits neatly in to that trend. However, it ends on a fairly optimistic note! Wikipedia has a very detailed narrative description here. Labels: end of the world.

The Bookshelf: 'Trace' by Patricia Cornwell, 2004

http://paul-willcox.blogspot.com/2007/05/trace-by-patricia-cornwell-2004.html

Wednesday, May 09, 2007. Trace' by Patricia Cornwell, 2004. For plot outline and links to reviews. I only read this because I enjoyed some of Kathy Reich's novels and thought they might be similar. Wrong. I found this meandering and disjointed. The mixed perspective narrative was clumsy and awkward. Much was implied rather than made explicit which I found increasingly infuriating. The character read like cardboard cut outs and fail to be engaging or sympathetic. Posted by Social Work Dad at 9:18 AM.

The Bookshelf: November 2006

http://paul-willcox.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Watchmen' by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (1987). Thanks to Mal for this great birthday present. Somehow I managed to miss out on a lot of graphic novels as I grew up. I used to avidly read. And I read a fair amount of. I have tried to 'catch up' in recent years by reading. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And a few others in adulthood, as well as watching a slew of stories turn into movies (often a poor transformation). My friend Mal has often said that. I liked how pr...

The Bookshelf: 'Gai-Jin' by James Clavell, 1993

http://paul-willcox.blogspot.com/2007/06/gai-jin-by-james-clavell-1993.html

Friday, June 22, 2007. Gai-Jin' by James Clavell, 1993. For plot info etc see here. This is a good story and is as well written as his other novels. The story moves along quite rapidly. I liked how the character of Tess Struan is so overshadowing, but she never actually appears! I would recommend this to those who have enjoyed other novels in the Asian Saga, but I wouldn't start with this one! Posted by Social Work Dad at 2:37 AM. Smacks of "Somebody's Done Somebody Wrong Song.". I am a father, a husband...

In the Games Cupboard. Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Sunday 20th May, 2007. Lisa and I spent the evening in the company of Jason and Annette and, as well as good food and good wine, great games were also enjoyed. Annette beat us all at Trans Europa. She finished a route really quickly whilst the rest of us were still floundering around, thus we all went 'bust' on the scoretrack whilst she remained on 8! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In the Games Cupboard. Friday, June 22, 2007. Wednesday 9th May, 2007. I trekked into town to join in the playtesting for Jack's next publication, It's Alive. I've played this a couple of times in prototype form and greatly enjoyed it. This was a chance to see the finished artwork and play it with people who had not played before. The artwork is superb; it matches the theme perfectly. I played two 5-player games and a 3-player. I won the first 5 player and shouted "it's alive! Which is always fun!

In the Games Cupboard. Tuesday, May 08, 2007. Saturday 5th May, 2007. Today I made it to Beyond Monopoly. Soon after arriving I joined with Robert, Richard and Paul A to play Marra Cash. A game Richard had brought. In essence this is an auction and area control game in which you try to lure shoppers to your bazaars to earn money. Players auction off bazaars of various colours and get a cut if they can lure shoppers to bazaars of the same colour. The game is made more interesting by the dealing out of Loy...

In the Games Cupboard. Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Monday 21st May, 2007. Whilst our daughters played in the garden, Jason and I had a go at several Pitch Car. Tracks. Jason won the first 3 races in a row; I got stuck repeatedly on a jump during the first game, and stuck in a tunnel on the second - the third - I kept coming off the track! However, I made up for it (a little! During the fourth race in which I lapped Jason to take victory! That evening was Games Night! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

I won both games, winning all 3 rounds in the first game. Lisa picked unfortunate cards, particularly for the yellow cities. Still, we both enjoyed playing and having a pot of coffee with cream! In a change to the norm though we played 3 games of Trans Europa. I won all 3 games, although they were all fairly close. Lisa started to look fed up with losing (she did seem to have harder routes than me! But assured me that she was still enjoying it and thought it was a good game. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In the Games Cupboard. Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Saturday 19th May, 2007. Today was Beyond Monopoly! I arrived late so lots of games were in progress. I hung around for awhile until Andy arrived. I then introduced him to the joys of It's Alive! Despite losing 37 to 54 Andy enjoyed the game and was impressed with the artwork. We then had a go at Balloon Cup. Andy had played before and so explained it to me thoroughly. We enjoyed this as it was well-balanced and fun! We mutually agreed to try Architekton.

Out of the Games Cupboard: September 2006

Out of the Games Cupboard. A random assortment of reflections, musings and a running commentary on life. Sunday, September 24, 2006. I might have broken my vestigial tail! On Friday I returned to the doctors to have my bottom felt! If it isn't broken then I will probably need to continue with pain relief and bottom-exercises until it goes away. The part of this I find really frustrating is that I don't know how I injured it in the first place! I haven't fallen on my bottom for years (honest! I thought wh...

Home Automation and Security. A smart home, is a happy home. How much does it cost? The first question I get when I mention my setup is -How much did it cost to do that? But it’s not that black and white, you can spend as much or as little as you want. Like lego you can add, take away or move most of the solution around to meet your needs so the cost isn’t fixed. To help answer this question though I thought I’d give a run down on what the basic setup. Would look like and cost, so:. Vera Lite - £129.
