Over the years my experience in feature films and television has merged with the evolution of the feature doc. Thanks to digital innovations more docs are being released in cinema and on DVD. Documentaries are increasingly adopting entertainment values and fictional narrative techniques, just as drama features are flirting with documentary values. The clips I’ve chosen are from films made primarily for theatrical release. Nauru, an Island Adrift.

I started out as a drama editor, in television and features, until I became interested in documentaries eight years into my career. Though most of the basic principles of editing drama are common to documentary, editing dialogue is unique to fiction. In these scenes the criteria is subtle, to create convincing relationships between the protagonists. I'll sleep when I'm dead.

My enthusiasm for television began in the early nineties when I met the then commissioning editor for C4’s Dispatches, David Lloyd. I was inspired by the combination of his determination to challenge the status quo and his passion to make aesthetically groundbreaking films.
