Give and Take – Life Most Curious
https://lifemostcurious.wordpress.com/2011/06/20/give-and-take
The ramblings of PaulineH. 8220;All our scientific and philosophic ideals are altars to unknown gods.”. William James, nineteenth-century philosopher. Give the god of technology a good old Google and chances are you’ll get a wiki entry about the mythological Greek god Hephaestus or possibly the goddess Athena. I suggest you don’t trawl further as you’ll unearth some whacky ‘online tribes’, entertaining but faintly disturbing. Staff writer Adrian Hatwell was assigned to future gaze, tracking down transhum...

Brooding blacks: Day 1 – Life Most Curious
https://lifemostcurious.wordpress.com/2013/07/19/brooding-blacks-day-1
The ramblings of PaulineH. Brooding blacks: Day 1. One of the nicest things about where Orca and I are currently based in New Zealand is two mini stormwater ‘lakes’, situated a stone’s throw from our front door and separated by a narrow bridge. These tiny catchments play host and home to an entire wetland ecosystem: giant eels. Mallard and Paradise ducks; white faced herons; two black footed shags. The black swans with their eggs. Their personal best has been an even dozen, all of whom survived. I ha...

In the wake of the storm – Life Most Curious

The ramblings of PaulineH. In the wake of the storm. Every now and then, some would say with increasing frequency, Mother Nature unleashes the claws from her velvet tipped paws. While I’ve been working on this blog – a retrospective of photos shot in New Orleans on a 2010 visit – the weather has played a tumultuous background track. Showers, hail, sun and tornado. All take turns in an afternoon. New Orleans has a lush and fertile creative sector: authors and indie bookstores abound. People love their dogs.

Ignite – Life Most Curious

The ramblings of PaulineH. Imposing by day, the Auckland Museum. Is magical by night, as if the dust of history coating each exhibit brings it to life. Imagine my delight last night (Thursday 22 November) when I was able to wander through the twilight hued exhibits and watch the sun set from the rooftop events centre, all courtesy of AMP New Zealand. This is because AMP was hosting its National Awards Dinner in honour of the 15th annual AMP Scholarships. Are just as inspiring. I’m honoured that my ...

Gone to where the wild things are – Life Most Curious
https://lifemostcurious.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/gone-to-where-the-wild-things-are
The ramblings of PaulineH. Gone to where the wild things are. Brilliant children’s authors are dark and understand that although mothers may want sunshine and puppies for their darlings, more often than not, the little rugrats prefer slugs and things that go squish. Maurice Sendak, author of. Where the Wild Things Are. In the Night Kitchen. Was one of the greats who understood that. So selfishly speaking, it’s sad that he passed away on Tuesday because that means the 100th book he created. May 9, 2012.

Pondering Pomodoro – Life Most Curious
https://lifemostcurious.wordpress.com/2013/07/08/pondering-pomodoro
The ramblings of PaulineH. Whether you go for an old school timer or postmodern app, Cirillo’s Pomodoro Technique is worth pondering. While taking a rare moment away from the multiple tasks that currently dictate my daily existence, I rediscovered the Pomodoro Technique. Culinary types as well as those with a passing knowledge of Italian may recognise the pomodoro under the humbler guise of a tomato. Set a timer to 25 minutes (your pomodoro). Take a 3-5 minute break. Deep breath, cup of tea in the fresh ...
