July 25, 2016. Mission is an extreme sport. And to help me get in shape Im spending this week at the BMS World Mission training centre in Birmingham (UK) doing the course they run to prepare people for going overseas as short / mid term volunteers. Over the next couple of days Ill try and write a bit about each day. so from day 1 here are some questions to ponder:. Is our view of mission, something we do or which God does? How can we be tools in Gods mission? What filters do we use to see and understand ...

Calais, Chaos and the challenge of migration - Distinct Reflections

Laquo; Sabbatical reflections. Nauta training week ». August 07, 2015. Calais, Chaos and the challenge of migration. The news story of the summer is undoubtedly the disruption of the Dover Calais crossing and the reporting of migrants seeking to get into the UK illegally. As a news junkie I’m often a bit cynical about news management but the reporting of this story has been lazy in the extreme. Travel chaos is the result of an old fashioned industrial dispute. This results in travel delays. The vast ...

New Zealand trip - Distinct Reflections
http://neilbrighton.typepad.com/distinct_reflections/2015/05/new-zealand-trip.html
Laquo; Favourite worship songs. BUGB / BMS Baptist Assembly 2015 ». May 15, 2015. I’ve just returned from an amazing couple of weeks in New Zealand; most of the time being spent in Christchurch; the largest (only) city on the South Island. I went as part of a sabbatical to see what Baptist Church life looks like in New Zealand; but also because we have built a link with a church there. New Zealand is a great country, Christchurch is a lovely city to live in. I can see why so many people emigrate here...

Observing Baptist life in New Zealand - Distinct Reflections
http://neilbrighton.typepad.com/distinct_reflections/2015/05/observing-baptist-life-in-new-zealand.html
Laquo; Learning about New Zealand Baptists. Lessons from UK / NZ baptist life ». May 20, 2015. Observing Baptist life in New Zealand. In the last blog I looked at three elements which define Baptist life in Christchurch: activist / community orientated, minister led church structures and in the influence of Pentecostalism. These then flow into some other aspects of life there. In general it seems that for the last twenty years the Baptist Union has opted for a functional. What I didn’t get the chance to ...

Sabbatical reflections - Distinct Reflections
http://neilbrighton.typepad.com/distinct_reflections/2015/05/sabbatical-reflections-.html
Laquo; Flying long haul. Calais, Chaos and the challenge of migration ». May 31, 2015. As I return to my role in Poynton after a six week sabbatical I do so with an interesting mix of feelings. I’ve also had the opportunity to read a few books. I’ll post a couple of reviews over the next few weeks (and write one for Regent’s Reviews which will appear in due course). Both the reading and the travelling give me a fresh perspective on what I do and some thoughts about my ministry in the months ahead. In tru...

Distinct Reflections: Caravan
http://neilbrighton.typepad.com/distinct_reflections/caravan
September 01, 2013. This year’s caravanning expedition was to the Spanish Pyrenees, a longer journey but worth the extra drive. We’d visited the French side (Col de Tourmalet / Luz St Sauveur) . A few years ago but, with the younger members of the family doing GCSE Spanish, and the older ones trying to learn a bit of the language, we thought we give it a try on the Spanish sid. View from our pitch. Our return journey north was more broken up. We spent several days in the Lot valley. The cycling ...And t...

Laquo; A missional church. Step 1. 2014 Gender Stats, good news for Baptists? January 01, 2015. As thoughts turn to the year ahead it’s always with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty that I think about aims / resolutions. In any case 2014 demonstrated that whatever aims I wrote in January. I had no idea what was to happen! My ability to foretell the future hasn’t improved since last year but here are a few pointers. July 27, 2016. Mission training: shame and honour. Mission is something we do with God, we can be the catalyst God uses is my quote of the day from day 3 of mission training. However, the effectiveness of a catalyst in a reaction can depend on several factors and we want to create positive reactions and much of today revolved around how we can grow in effectiveness in mission. Our classroom for the week. And tomorrow is the final day of training. Posted at 11:17 PM. July 26, 2016. We’ve also had a remind...

Distinct Reflections: Books
http://neilbrighton.typepad.com/distinct_reflections/books
March 08, 2013. I read Susan Cain’s book. 0160;a couple of months ago and have been pondering it since. The premise of the book is that about half the population are introverts and for too long those who are naturally quiet, serious or sensitive have been overlooked; whilst the loudest have taken over. Her aim is to get the world to listen and harness the power of introverts. 0160;As someone who fits in the introvert camp it has been a fascinating read. Here are a couple of things I’ve taken from it.
