There really isn’t much going on here. I am just finishing up the first semester this year so that means giving the final exams and then calculating grades. And really that’s it Kind of boring right now. But I am still alive, all limbs are attached and I haven’t gone crazy, yet, so you know, that’s something. January 16, 2014.

Burkinako: May 2013

http://marikotravels.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 27, 2013. They might not have much, but Burkinabes do have their fashion, and they get into it. The general idea is the louder the better. Clothes generally fall into one of three categories: traditional African, pagne (pronounced panya), and western clothes that were clearly sent to Africa via aid organizations. Some memorable things that I've seen people wearing on the street on a normal day:. An old man wearing a Santa hat. A big buff guy wearing a fuzzy powder-blue Hello Kitty hat. Oddly,...

Monday, August 4, 2014. Saving the soils and more. The main part of the project involves teaching community members about soil preservation techniques. Burkina Faso is a serious subject to the problem of desertification. Eric, our painfully skinny trainer, explains the principles of composting. Rock lines and zai holes help to catch water and prevent erosion due to flooding. Regarding the Ebola outbreak in West Africa: Luckily, it has remained contained in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia thus far, none...

Hanging out with honeybadgers in Burkina Faso. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Monthly Archives: March 2013. Girls, girls, girls! March 30, 2013. First camp under the belt! A huge credit goes out to the girls. There were extremely patient. When there were unforeseen delays, they just waited without a single complaint. They were happy to dance to some random music in some downtime, were elated with bread and coffee (with condensed milk! Soap production (liquid and hard). Discussion of ...

Hanging out with honeybadgers in Burkina Faso. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Monthly Archives: March 2014. March 17, 2014. Looks like it’s been a while since I updated, so I am taking this opportunity (an all-nighter) to address that. This post is hence brought to you up tea and tomatoes. Burkinako: Pictures

http://marikotravels.blogspot.com/2014/05/pictures.html

Friday, May 9, 2014. Emmanuel helps paint the border around the map. Standing on the same table, you can see the line of where I was straining to reach with the paintbrush. Oh, the things I could do if I were so tall. I'm excited about how many students have been visiting the library. The books that the kids on the left are holding were donations from the NGO Darien Book Aid. Finally, a NYT article. About Africa by David Brooks that I appreciated. Happy weekend! Burkinako: January 2014

http://marikotravels.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 16, 2014. A few snapshots of moments that capture life in Burkina for me:. Goofy Smile hands a moto down to Ninja Turtle and 2 other guys who haven't distinguished themselves enough to have secret nicknames yet; photo credit to my mom. At the village market. Anytime I go around the village, there are sure to be bands of small children wandering around, and what could be more exciting for a little village kid than to see the white person biking by? They like to wave and shout "nasaara!

Monday, March 24, 2014. Photo: World Map Progress. I'm proud of how it's coming along. After the break I'll touch some things up (sorry, Indonesia) and work on the borders, and then we'll think of some activity to do with students for writing the country names. Almost there! Wednesday, March 12, 2014. Last Saturday was International Women's Day. Unlike last year. There were a bunch of events in my village organized by the mayor's office. Did they promote women in the community? Wend na ko-d veere. Refers...

Peace Corps: Jessica's Pursuit. Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Closure with my one-hundredth post. Ive been putting this closing blog off for the last month during my leisurely travels back to the US of A, which may be the safe excuse to go with. Ive had so many undulating feelings since my big move out of village, my home for the last 2 years, to my most recent realization that the door to that gratifying life experience is only open by the key hole.
