Peaces of Afghanistan

Below are the impressions and thoughts of a young western woman working with a foreign NGO in Afghanistan. Often, the posts will be raw and unfiltered, as I am struggling to make sense of the things I hear and see around me. I mean to find the peaces (not the “peace”, as there is never just one peace), the beauty, the diversity of a society which has long been presented to us as a backwards haven for religious fanatics and violence. Readers are encouraged to help with pertinent comments.

Peaces of Afghanistan: Proper car arrangements

http://peacesofafghanistan.blogspot.com/2011/07/proper-car-arrangement.html

Sunday, 31 July 2011. Today I found out what is considered the proper seating arrangement in a car of 4 1 seats when the passengers are two women and two men. It is not, as one might naively think, putting three people in the back seats and one in the front. No, no, that would make people uncomfortable! In such a situation, both women ride in front - yes on one seat, even when the road is a bumpy affair, barely distinguishable from the rocky landscape. Posted by Expat girl.

Peaces of Afghanistan: Come to my house, have some tea!

http://peacesofafghanistan.blogspot.com/2011/12/about-afghan-hospitality.html

Monday, 12 December 2011. Come to my house, have some tea! Anyway, today it seems my writing mood is back, so here it goes:. I want to talk about hospitality, because the Afghan's approach to it has often left me humbled. In my work I sometimes travel to villages and meet some of the poorest people living in one of the poorest provinces in one of the poorest countries in the world. Lots of poverty, it seems, but not in spirit. Makes you think, doesn't it? Posted by Expat girl. 18 December 2011 at 23:54.

Peaces of Afghanistan: Sometimes rules have to be broken

http://peacesofafghanistan.blogspot.com/2011/12/sometimes-rules-have-to-be-broken.html

Monday, 19 December 2011. Sometimes rules have to be broken. Upon leaving the girls’ school where we met the women’s shura, my colleagues and I were invited for lunch at the house of our (female) community mobilizer in that village, while we waited for the men’s shura to convene. In another room of the same house, as we found out later, the women’s shura were preparing their transgression. After the meeting, the women had proud and somewhat surprised smiles; they still couldn’t believe they pulled ...

Peaces of Afghanistan: Mission impossible: disguising a western woman in a chadari

http://peacesofafghanistan.blogspot.com/2011/12/mission-impossible-disguising-western.html

Monday, 12 December 2011. Mission impossible: disguising a western woman in a chadari. Of course, not being comfortable in your clothes shows, so men walking by me on the street were staring even more than when I go out without it. Later I was told that it was the way I walk and carry my body that gave me away more than the jeans which were slightly visible underneath. For the purpose of illustrating what a western woman looks like when she puts on a chadari for the first time, here it goes:.

Kabul Street Eats | Enduring Wanderlust

http://www.enduringwanderlust.com/kabul-street-eats

September 1, 2011. For the adventurous eater venturing into Kabul’s street food scene, these three Dari words, which roughly translates to I’m just looking, are key. To stroll by Kabul’s food stalls is to run a gauntlet of aggressive vendors, stepping into your path and thrusting samples at you. However, the reward for wading into this chaotic scene is to foray into the varied cuisine of Afghanistan. Follow Scott Ruddick’s tour of the Kabul food stalls:. Kabul Food Stall Scott Ruddick. Each dish costs be...

A busy girls thoughts and ideas about her wedding, makeup and much more! I decided to fill out the 99 questions tag that’s been floating around the interwebs 🙂 feel free to copy it and do it yourself. I’m tagging Alix Jenna. 1) Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed? Closed… Toby might be in there. 2) Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotels? Only if I need them 🙂. 3) Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out? Out, I don’t even make the bed hahaha. At work I guess?

Peaces of Cake - Blog

Beware: There are some that will attempt to connect with you because they want what they think you have. There are some that will enter into your life and serve as a distraction as they will occupy your time, energy and attention while your purpose and vision die. There are some that will be present during every event and moment but will control the atmosphere with unenthused energy and negativity. 1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners – KJV. Little Peaces of Candy | Pondering the bits of life that bring me peace

Little Peaces of Candy. Pondering the bits of life that bring me peace. My husband’s grandfather passed away yesterday at the age of 90; peacefully, in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his loved ones. I have accompanied my spouse to his grandparents’ home over the past few days as they prepared for his passing, and have shared in the discussions of their family patriarch and of the dying process in general. All in all, yes, I’m really content. In all reality, it doesn’t really m...She’s o...
