Children as young as 10 keep the discipline of Ramadan fasting. Young and very elderly and pregnant or nursing women are exempted from the fasting requirement, but may fast if they choose. To my mind the going without water would seem the most arduous. One can set aside hunger, but the thirst is nearly constant!
