Up until this recent weekend, the winter here in California has been quite warm and dry, which made for excellent climbing conditions, but not so great conditions for snow sports. My friend Kevin expressed just as much interest in summiting Tom as I did. So we planned to spend the first week of April in Bishop to do some climbing and to attempt Tom as a day hike. Mt Russell at 14,094 ft is the 7th tallest peak in California. The easiest route to the summit is via the East Ridge, which is a 3rd class ridge with about 1000 ft of exposure on both sides.
