Happy Mother’s Day | Peking Diary

A glimpse into what I am seeing and thinking this year in China. May 12, 2014. Happy Mother’s Day. One of the best things about living in China has got to be that you can get a bunch of peonies for $1.50 from a street vendor! I had been wondering where they were because peonies originate from China and I’ve seen them in landscaping but not in florist windows. Here are the boys inspired by the Chinese acrobat show they watched. Look at Samuel! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

A glimpse into what I am seeing and thinking this year in China. Monthly Archives: October 2013. October 5, 2013. Going out for a walk in Beijing. Quite a contrast from the last post… So, it had to happen, the pollution levels in Beijing hit hazardous levels so it is time to break out the air masks we brought over as well as turn on our 3 air purifiers in our tiny apartment to high. Here’s the armor the boys made out of those bedroom slippers…. Blog at WordPress.com.

A glimpse into what I am seeing and thinking this year in China. May 9, 2014. It’s official. The world is coming to an end George Clooney is getting married! Yesterday Joshua started telling us about how he had gotten selected in class, by popular vote, to be the 10. Later that night I decided to explain to him that while we are letting him do this as a cultural experience, our family doesn’t really believe in what the team stands for. Like what? 2 thoughts on “ Young Pioneers. May 10, 2014 at 7:43 am.

A glimpse into what I am seeing and thinking this year in China. Monthly Archives: June 2014. June 19, 2014. See you again = goodbye). Samuel’s first baby teeth finally fell out, two in one day. So, we got to see what the Chinese tooth fairy would do. She’s pretty generous giving, 10 yuan = $1.50. Samuel did a little jig in the morning when he saw that, sort of like the NFL touchdown receivers do. To cross the massive roads, taking these footbridges was helpful. I love how they have a lanes for bikes.

A glimpse into what I am seeing and thinking this year in China. April 23, 2014. This is the view out the window when I lay down with the boys to put them to bed. The photo doesn’t capture it too well, but with the lights off in the room, the scene seems a little magical to us. All the dirt and pollution is invisible, and it feels like Christmas. We will miss this view. As for me, I’m ashamed to say that I have learned very little Chinese. The main thing I say in Chinese is: I’m sorry. I’m Korean.

Tangs in Beijing: October 2013
http://pekingtangs.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 29, 2013. Annette said that they were some one of the most beautiful nature spots she had ever been to, and that would have to sum it up. Though we did run into the crowds of the 700 million strong Chinese tourpocalypse, and almost got stampeded at times, we still had a very lovely time. I wouldn't recommend traveling during Chinese National Holiday week ever again though! This was called Pearl Shoals Falls, to describe the pearly appearance of the water tumbling down the mountain. Our c...

Thursday, December 26, 2013. Christmas is just another regular work/school in China, but Annette managed to buy this floor sample Christmas tree from Ikea, we had the boys play hooky from school, and we found a cafe that served turkey and ham for our Christmas feast. Tangs in Beijing: February 2014
http://pekingtangs.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 27, 2014. As the smog in Beijing was off the charts this week, and the WHO warned everyone to stay inside, we kept the boys home from school. Here are some photos are what it looked like from our street, and then the day after the smog finally cleared. When we are stuck indoors, the boys enjoy just being around each other, whether it's reading, playing with legos, or pillow fights on the bed. Sometimes, Joshua will run laps around our living room coffee table while listening to his ipod.
Tangs in Beijing: Sample Joshua's 1st grade class
http://pekingtangs.blogspot.com/2014/03/sample-joshuas-1st-grade-class.html
Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Sample Joshua's 1st grade class. This is the poem Joshua is learning today:. Out of the 42 characters, 25 of them are new to him. He's expected to learn this in 1 day. (He only needs to be able to write 6 of them, but should be able to recognize the others and write the pinyin for them). It's hard. I've been trying to learn it all morning, and I'm getting a headache. I add words to a flashcard app to study for his tests. Over these past 7 months, we've already added over 1000!
Tangs in Beijing: May 2013
http://pekingtangs.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 23, 2013. We were waffling on where we should depart from, and what date to depart for awhile, but once we made a decision, everything else came very quickly: tickets purchased, work end dates fixed, other summer plans decided, and here we go. August 21 2013 will be our launch date. Annette has a done a lot of leg work around looking for schools for the boys. Hopefully there will be spots of our boys to attend the primary school attached to Peking University. That we are eyeing. When An...

Tangs in Beijing: August 2013
http://pekingtangs.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 24, 2013. When we landed into a cloud of smog. Joshua noted, "There is a lot of carbon dioxide out there." Well, technically it's not CO2, but he's got the right idea. I was immediately grateful that Annette brought those three air purifiers with us. We monitor the Beijing Air Quality Index (. And have noticed that it seems to have a circadian rhythm varying with the wind patterns. Contemplated going on a run yesterday, except it was 91 degrees outside. Wednesday, August 21, 2013. We ar...
