Adventures in Pencil Integration

It was somewhere in my sophomore year and the teacher was bubbling over with excitement. "We're going on a Pencil Quest! I raise my hand. "So, you will take us to various sites. Is it like a field trip? Yep," he says. "And each site will have a page that you will read. When you read the page, you'll answer questions.". More like a moving. Textbook," he says, "with tons of pages. Imagine that! I thought it was a quest," a student says. And the conflict driving the quest is? No thank you," I tell him.

Adventures in Pencil Integration: June 2010

http://pencilintegration.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

An apology letter students. When I first got the cameras, teachers warned me that students would all of a sudden be "off task." See, in our profession, we have this magical formula called Time on Task and it helps determine if students will be successful in their education. I scoffed when I heard that projects and pencils and pictures would all take my students "off task.". Was this a failed experiment? Six lies we tell ourselves about technology. So, I'm at the PIE Conference and I place my slides on th...

Adventures in Pencil Integration: Just Teach Them To Solve for X

http://pencilintegration.blogspot.com/2010/11/just-teach-them-to-solve-for-x.html

Just Teach Them To Solve for X. A few people have asked me to keep posting to this blog instead of just consolidating. So, I'm keeping this bad boy around, but I'll start posting these to my other blog as well. Incidentally, before writing this post (or looking at any comments on blogs), I created a video yesterday that is on my personal blog today dealing with this. I want to assure you that none of this is ever meant to demean, disrespect or insult anyone - just provoke thought. Metaphors are how we as...

Adventures in Pencil Integration: He Just Likes the Class for the Pencils

http://pencilintegration.blogspot.com/2010/11/he-just-likes-class-for-pencils.html

He Just Likes the Class for the Pencils. I'm not the Nice Guy Teacher who hands out candy and offers free time (Isn't all education supposed to be an act of liberation? And plays the pal at recess and lunch time. I am strict. I allow a large amount of freedom (we have tables instead of desks, where the students are allowed to eat and they may choose where to sit), but I will correct a child every time I see disrespect or laziness. That's only because of the pencils," another teacher says. His voice trail...

Adventures in Pencil Integration: Sketchy Portraits: 8th Grade Identity and Pencils

http://pencilintegration.blogspot.com/2010/11/sketchy-portraits.html

Sketchy Portraits: 8th Grade Identity and Pencils. Despite its versatility, few people respect the pencil. While we talk admire the permanence of ink, we use "pencil me in" with a certain sense of derision. It's temporary. It's gray. For all its graphite glory, it seems immanently practical and yet always tentative, always questioning, always mysterious, always meandering through shades of gray. It's permanent and temporary. A first grade teacher pulls me aside and complains, "William was mouthy.". What ...

Adventures in Pencil Integration: Don't Let Them Take Pencils Home

http://pencilintegration.blogspot.com/2010/07/dont-let-them-take-pencils-home.html

Don't Let Them Take Pencils Home. This post was largely influenced by. Larry Ferlazzo's latest post. And my own experience with 1:1 computing and my friend Javi's experience with a Parent University. Gertrude the School Curriculum Instructional Interventionist Academic Specialist storms into my classroom after school, "Tom, Tom, you cannot have students bring home pencils and paper.". Is this about the dangers of carrying them in their pockets? It's not about that at all.". I met with the parents and the...

it is well: capitol 10k

http://sarahfulcher.blogspot.com/2009/04/capitol-10k.html

Thursday, April 9, 2009. Last week I ran in the Austin American Statesman Capitol 10k.  It is quite an event, with somewhere around 17,000 runners and some very entertaining costumes (this year's 2nd place costume winner was a "running nose", not to mention the 1st place "tree-huggers").  I'm glad Austin is weird. . It's a good thing I have these little ones to keep me humble. :). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Jen and Kyle Frazier. Justin Taylor: Between Two Worlds.

it is well: March 2009

http://sarahfulcher.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 20, 2009. Since I didn't travel this spring break, I've been able to do things in Austin that I normally don't have time for (or am too tired to do after a week of teaching! Running at Town Lake in the middle of the day, trying a local juice/smoothie shop. And of course, I set up a blog this week. Like many of my friends have claimed, I am a victim of peer pressure when it comes to blogging.so we'll see how long this lasts. :). Staining a playground at a daycare. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Mr Spencer's Adventures In Pencil Integration. Why Were Your Kids Playing Games? I also read Mr Spencer's post The Con Academy. I liked this post because it demonstrates opposing views in the education system and how Spencer feels about constructing his classroom. This blog is very insightful! Christopher Reindl's EDM310 Class Blog. Sunday, October 30, 2011. Do you Teach or Do you Educate? I recently watched a you tube video by Joshua Bloom called "Do you teach or Do you Educate? Don't Let Them Take Home The Pencils". When was last time you picked up a pencil? The last time I used a pencil I was doing a wood working project and used it to mark a line. When was the last time you put pencil to paper? Everyday, students and teachers must make decisions toward our future. They choose what they...

The range of styles and periods that come to mind in such a satisfying and challenging way is only the beginning of experiencing Peters' work. Is it Archaic or Hellenistic? And it is a must see.
