The People's Daily: May 2008
http://thepeoplesdaily.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 30, 2008. Day Five: Exotic in Beijing. Today was my first weekend day in Beijing, and I realized Beijing girls have a thing for American guys. One of my coworkers graciously took me out to dinner tonight, and then to a bar- I got rather heavily hit on. Anyway, I then walked to work, where I met a few coworkers, and the girlfriend of one. We went back to the hutongs and actually found a great place to eat (again, rather spicy). There, I talked about what I thought was the American pers...I rec...

The People's Daily: Beer Garden & Kreuzberg
http://thepeoplesdaily.blogspot.com/2013/08/beer-garden-kreuzberg.html
Wednesday, August 7, 2013. Beer Garden and Kreuzberg. Well, I think I finally feel like I'm living somewhere, with new friends coming out of the woodwork and going with them to "hang out" at new places, rather than "be a tourist" at new places. Neat and foreboding clouds over Karl-Marx-Allee. We linked up with Florian and Kristine once more, this time with some 8 other friends that were touring around the different stalls (these two are pretty popular! The brave (led by Florian and Stephan) decided to mo...

The People's Daily: September 2012

Sunday, September 23, 2012. Mark and Erik's East Asia Adventures: Seoul. We took off to Seoul appreciating that Erik knew enough Chinese to get around Shanghai, and equally dreading our complete lack of Korean. Did we have any prayer of actually getting around competently? For those without enough time to read the details, we will sum up our journey to Seoul in three key points:. 1) Tragic, repeated shaming of our ancestors and the Korean culture through gaffes, klutziness, and complete incompetence.

The People's Daily: June 2008
http://thepeoplesdaily.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 30, 2008. The subway started checking luggage on Sunday, with metal detectors. They also made me take a swig of my water before letting me walk in with it (apparently to make sure it wasn't toxic). Dinner Saturday was amazing- it was Korean Barbecue, and the best darn food I've had in Beijing by a longshot (sad, isn't it? I'll have to go back. Noticed a small company dancing to really bad techno-pop outside in Wudaokou in the morning, as an early workout. They did not look happy:. The Hall o...

The People's Daily: More on Dinner
http://thepeoplesdaily.blogspot.com/2013/08/more-on-dinner.html
Thursday, August 8, 2013. Turns out we had 14 people (total, ourselves included) for dinner last night. Chicken Paprika turned out a bit on the chewy side but everyone politely pretended they liked it. As chef, I got a bit of applause and, sadly, found that flattery still makes me blush. I am *sigh* weak-willed. 2) I clarified my own positions on a lot of issues by explaining them to people who didn't already have strong and informed opinions about them. I'm also following a trend where I'm realizing the...

Wednesday, August 14, 2013. A bit more on cooking. Here are a few pictures from previously-described epic dinner, including me describing our meal and showing off a heck of a beer-chin. Wednesday, July 31, 2013. The Wall and some Jazz. Last night on the way to see jazz we biked past 1.3km of the (outer) Berlin Wall that still stands. On the West side of this strip, the original graffiti remains. On the east side, there is new graffiti that isn't as exciting, but as we rode past it all, it still felt both surreal and magical. For myself, I finally felt. It is difficult to imagine the Berlin wall, I think. It surrounded West Berlin, but it was the people on the outside. Was this the entir...

Sunday, June 30, 2013. Paris: Some photos of Erik and Heather, the City, and Versailles. A few photos, a few stories. Versailles, near Marie Antoinette's mansion. This swan was totally unafraid of humans. The farm hamlet built to entertain Marie-Antoinette; still functions as a real farm. Panoramic of Paris to the Southwest from Arc du Triomphe. Note Eiffel Tower and Heather. My favorite: Paris, WNW, with financial district in distance, Heather, and storm clouds. Seine, looking west from Eiffel Tower.

Sunday, August 3, 2008. Reporting LIVE from Beijing Capital Airport. I said "no, I don't have that much money.". Of course you have the money! Only 70, 80 kuai! I'm about to go back to the US! I'm carrying very little RMB! This was a lie). Alright, how much is in your wallet? Maybe I'll make you a deal.". No, no, it's fine. Dongzhimen.". Come on, you want to go to the airport.". No, I told you where I want to go. Dongzhimen.". Not at all.". Luckily, we were laughing the whole time. He was awesome. And no...
