Although the notification of food supplements and foods for special medical purposes is mandatory in most EU member states, different national laws and registration procedures may apply. Food and food ingredients that have not been used for human consumption to a significant degree in the EU before 15 May 1997 are considered novel foods and novel food ingredients and should be authorised before they can be marketed.
