Members and friends assembled in the new Welcome Centre for a visit to Spetchley Park Gardens and from where the wind turbine could be seen across the fields working well in the breeze. We were introduced to David Pollitt volunteer gardener and guide who gave us background history to the house and gardens which are in the process of being overhauled and improved with the aid of Heritage lottery funding. In the year 1013 there was an invasion of Danes, who after sacking Winchester and Oxford, came to Pershore, and were defeated here by the townspeople commanded by one ‘Harley’. Harley is made knight in Jerusalem. A descendent of the Conqueror of Sweyne joined the first Crusade, and was Knighted by Godfrey de Bouillon. His effigy is in the Church.
