Books and Pieces: Stephanie Bishop's unnerving The Other Side of the World
http://notaboutbooks.blogspot.com/2015/07/stephanie-bishops-unnerving-other-side.html
Monday, July 6, 2015. Stephanie Bishop's unnerving The Other Side of the World. This book has come with enthusiastic recommendations from many critics and booksellers I deeply respect. Martin Shaw from Readings, a very discriminating reader, proclaimed: '.without question one the finest Australian novels of 2015'. I had to read it, despite the cover, once again, turning me off. Books and Pieces: May 2015

Friday, May 29, 2015. Some Excellent New Reads. Dennis Lehane's new book World Gone By. It's as good, if not better, than Live By Night. Which introduced Joe Coughlin as an up-and-coming gangster during the depression and prohibition years of 30's America. When I read the first in the series, The Given Day. Published in 2008, I was completely overwhelmed by Lehane's power as a chronicler of early 20th century America and its developing and frequently ugly power structures. The second volume Live By Night.

Friday, August 22, 2014. David Mitchell loses the plot: The Bone Clocks. English author David Mitchell of. Fame, has just released his sixth novel the Booker long-listed. Unfortunately, and I say this as a great fan of Mitchell's, it is up there with his first novel Ghostwritten. As one of his weakest. I'd be surprised if it makes the Booker short list, but if it does,. It has no chance of winning. Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Was an exception and in my view his best. The problem is the fantasy element....
