School Zone Flashing Lights RTA 3-Year Trial

For the 3 years up until early 2006 the RTA trialled school zone flashing lights at 43 schools across NSW. The results of the trial were published in April 2006 in a 110-page report that is available on the RTA's web site here. The report describes a rigorous scientific study conducted in accordance with accepted data collection and statistical analysis procedures and standards. The report states repeatedly that the results are statistically significant (p.v, vi, vii, 46, 57, 64, 65, 67, 68).

The RTA's 2003-2006 trial proved that flashing lights significantly improve road safety around schools. It also showed that Type 1 lights (2 flashing lights only) were more effective at reducing traffic speeds than Type 3 lights (2 flashing lights plus flashing ring around the "40" numerals.). However that the original lights were unreliable as they had an average of 2 faults in 18 months (99.3% reliability). They embarked on a new trial that ran for 6 months from February 2007. 2 Consecutive 40km/h Zones. On King Georges Beverly Hills there were originally two separate school zones 400m apart, at Beverly Hills Girls High / Beverly Hills Primary. They were turned into one single 40km/h zone over 1km long when the speed cameras were installed. King Georges Rd Beverly Hills 1km Long 40km/h Zone. Compare the above with Fairfield West Primary / Westfield Sports High, Hamilton Rd Fairfield West. Blatant revenue raising at Beverly Hills is the only explanation.
