The Meaning of “When” | phdin history

http://phdinhistory.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-meaning-of-when.html

The Meaning of “When”. I was recently asked to join a local committee to plan the centennial celebration of our local school district. The City of Maryville, Tennessee's public system was poised to commemorate its 100th. And so the question boiled down to the meaning of “when”—as in, when was the school system founded? And more importantly, why does that matter? What about Johnston’s surrender? Or a General in Texas who surrendered? Or when President Johnson declared an end to the state of war (in 1866)?

Was There a Schlieffen Plan? | phdin history

http://phdinhistory.blogspot.com/2012/05/was-there-schlieffen-plan.html

Was There a Schlieffen Plan? In a 1999 journal article published in War in History. According to Zuber, Schlieffen did have some contingency plans, although they remained in his possession until he died, and were not locked in the vault with the rest of the German war plans. Zuber insisted that on its own, the Plan, or Denkschrift. Zuber’s article and subsequent publications provoked a fifteen-year debate in War in History. For those interested in the heated debate in War in History thus far, here is the...

The Day the Archives Walked in the Door. Eric B. Schultz. Alan Lomax (left) with Richard Queen of Soco. Junior Square Dance Team at the Mountain. Music Festival, Asheville, North Carolina,. Mid century. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. I loved Randall’s latest post. Which mixed music and archives, and reminded me how tricky it can be to capture and preserve historic “sound.” It also brought to mind the story of Alan Lomax. In 1938, Lomax sat Jelly Roll Morton. 8221; would result in over twelve hours ...

West of the moon. First the bees, now the bats? From the New York Times is disturbing- apparently bats are dying, in large numbers, and no one knows why. They're looking at a set of caves and mines in the northeast that are home to large bat colonies, and in all of these caves, something like ninety percent of the bats are dead or dying from a mysterious illness. ( ScienceDaily. Also has an article, with mostly the same information.). 25 March 2008 in scientifact. First the bees, now the bats?

West of the moon. Laquo; playing the numbers. Is history a science? Just the other day, I was thinking that it must be some kind of indication about my personality that I got a warm fuzzy happy glow when I heard a newscaster on NPR use the phrase giant robotic arms on the space station and not be talking about fiction. Giant robotic arms! On the space station! Or at least robot arms. Except that I'm experiencing some ambivalence about robots at the moment, thanks to this video. But if were seeing it on Y...

West of the moon. Laquo; hitting the ground running. or not. Playing the numbers. ». A personal history of the magnetic fields. I'm pretty sure that it was 100,000 Fireflies, on a mix-tape from a friend, that made me a fan. Everything accelerated from there. Music is such a social experience, and most of my college friends liked the Magnetic Fields; I owned a few CDs, but even if I hadn't, the music was somehow just always there. Was an -event-. No matter how many times I listened to it, I found some...

PhD-ing For Dummies – All Those Questions You're Too Afraid To Ask Your Supervisor

All Those Questions You're Too Afraid To Ask Your Supervisor. An Experiment in Writing. December 19, 2016. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I did say I’d be gone for a while, though I wasn’t quite certain how long. I can’t say things have changed much, but I did want to get this post out before the end of the year, no matter what. Anyone want to count the Tolkien quotes in this post? I’ll give you a cookie if you spot them all.]. Didn’t your examiners get it the first time around? Conclusions are tiring thi...

PhD-ing in industry

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Saturday, August 8, 2015. Things I'm looking forward to in Academia. I only thought it was correct to list the positives I have to look forward to I'm academia after listing the positives I had in industry. This is about to be a very naive list of things, so maybe in a few years I'll revisit with a series of edits about how much of a mistake I made. 1 I'm super pumped about the students. Mentoring grads and undergrads will be a lot of fun. 3 I won't report to anyone! 4 Being a...

Http:/ w...
