homunculus: July 2014
http://philipball.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Postings from the interface of science and culture. Thursday, July 24, 2014. Science books you (and I) should read. Asked me to recommend my favourite science book for a special issue. Of the magazine. I had to go for Richard Holmes’ The Age of Wonder. Harper Press, London, 2008). Lots of science books have interested me, and many have captivated me with their wonderful writing. But this is the only one that left me feeling quite so excited. Who should write books about science? I don’t think Dawki...

Postings from the interface of science and culture. Saturday, June 27, 2015. Sam Leith’s comment. Tuesday, June 16, 2015. The many truths of Tim Hunt. Blimey. That Tim Hunt then. It feels like any single point of view is not enough; I need a superposition of states here. I read Athene Donald. Then I read responses and comments by Jenny Rohn, Margaret Harris and Deborah Blum. I can’t help feeling a bit sorry for Tim, seeing how genuinely distraught. Do we believe rumours that Tim had form for this kind of...
homunculus: Beckett's epic fail (again)
http://philipball.blogspot.com/2015/07/becketts-epic-fail-again.html
Postings from the interface of science and culture. Monday, July 13, 2015. Beckett's epic fail (again). Yet whenever I see Beckett put to use this way, I can’t help thinking “Hmphrgh”. This is Beckett you’re quoting. Yes, Samuel. Beckett. Does anyone believe that he was ever going to write a soundbite of fist-punching, keep-on-goin’ self-motivation? The line comes, of course, from Beckett’s late work Worstward Ho. But it’s sad that the irony here is so seldom recognized. Indeed, what seems part...8220;th...

Postings from the interface of science and culture. Friday, September 26, 2014. Science needn't hide its mistakes. Editor says that peer review is dead? I hope that isn’t what you’d be left thinking from my Comment. From an international consortium using a space telescope called Planck show that BICEP2’s data is very likely to have come not from the microwave background at all, but from warm dust scattered through our own galaxy. Had all the gravitas of a papal edict: “Men of Science Convene”...His scurr...

Postings from the interface of science and culture. Wednesday, July 01, 2015. Perkin's purple: a journey around London. I have just presented one of BBC Radio 4’s Science Stories, a new series looking at episodes in the history of science. This one. Tony Travis's authoritative The Rainbow Makers. And my own Bright Earth. Visiting the site of William Perkin’s family home in Shadwell – on a very blustery spring day! The blue plaque marking the spot where Perkin discovered mauveine. For the British army in ...

The resurrection of a Cornish Cottage. Friday, February 11, 2011. The walls went up fairly quickly and finally I was able to see daily changes and the building taking shape. Using a mix of block and timber framework meant that it wasn't long before getting the primary walls and upper floor level in place. Time-lapse movie. Right-click/play or Ctrl click/play. Slab of the extension. This space vented out through a pipe to the yard which was later covered. To keep this open a spare piece of drainag...The l...

The resurrection of a Cornish Cottage. Friday, January 7, 2011. For the first time I could walk out of the living room onto hard level ground. The foundation was complete and I had left the builder, Chris, to start building the walls whilst I was away in Italy. I came back to something which was now looking less like a demolition site to something of a beginning to a new home. Well, by still using a lot of imagination. The price for scrap metals was soaring at that time. Thursday, January 6, 2011. In the...

No glory of scoring goals for me then. Had I been taller I would have satisfied myself by goal hanging in the literal sense, instead I passed the time making mud pies and throwing them at the other ‘left-over’ defenders. Hold it there.”. 8220;They’re in the PENALTY AREA! The Italians believe t...
