Birding: Trip Report for Arizona, May/June 2013
http://www.philjeffrey.net/AZ2013June.html
Arizona, May/June 2013 trip report. Arizona Birding Trip, May 30th - June 8th 2013. Timing was dictated by wanting to cover NYC spring migration and the Hatteras Pelagic. Absent these considerations it would have been better to do this trip some time in May. In 2006 I was there the week before Memorial Day weekend. Sunrise/Sunset and Weather Forecasts. Phoenix Feb 7th: sunrise 5:20am, sunset 7:30pm. I used three major resources: the AZ-NM mailing list; eBird sightings reports; the Tucson RBA. On prev...

Gray-hooded Gull on Coney Island beach, July-August 2011
http://www.philjeffrey.net/GHGU_ConeyIsland.html
Gray-hooded Gull on Coney Island, July 2011. Originally identified as a Black-headed Gull, a Gray-headed Gull was discovered by Sara Burch and Jacob McCartney on July 24th. The eBird reviewer (Doug Gochfeld) caught this ID and the rarity of the bird was made clear on the following Thursday July 28th. That's an eternity in rare bird chasing but fortunately the gull stuck around. The excitement was so palpable there was even a NY Times article. Gray-hooded Gull (aka Grey-headed Gull. So it appears wild, al...

http://www.philjeffrey.net/Colorado2014.html
CO/NM/TX, April 2014 trip report. Tripartate Trip: Colorado Grouse, Colima Hike, Upper Texas Coast. An unusual trip that occurred in 3 segments based on 4 concatenated flights: a week in Colorado recreating in part the 2004 Colorado "Chicken Tour"; a few days around Big Bend National Park looking for Colima Warbler and Streak-backed Oriole (NM); a quick visit to the Upper Texas Coast around High Island for migrants. My 2004 "Chicken Tour". For birding locations. eBird reports. Provide little or none of t...

Phil Jeffrey's Bird Photography: October 2011
http://avianphoto.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Phil Jeffrey's Bird Photography. Bird photographs from the USA and beyond. Tuesday, October 18, 2011. EOS-1D X - notsomuch. I'm underwhelmed by the announced 1D X that Canon says will be available as of March 2012. (Nice summary by Rob Galbraith's site. Basically it's an 18 mpix full frame fast-firing pro camera with lots of video extras and rather substantial redesign (again! Upside: this leaves extra cash to consider the new 600/4L II (which is about the same size/weight as my 500/4L). All text and pho...

Phil Jeffrey's Bird Photography. Bird photographs from the USA and beyond. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. This is not new news, but the recent Indiana law - misinterpreted or not - reminds me that I always meant to post about this. It was when I was researching the replacement clamp for the BH-55 that I came across a snippet of news, as shown in this thread: http:/ www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/956293. Links to this post. Phil Jeffrey's Bird Photography. Bird photographs from the USA and beyond. Wednesday, April 24, 2013. A comment on one of my photos on Flickr. This morning prompted me to go look at Tallenge, a photo site that touts itself as "Earth's Largest Talent Platform" and suggesting that dollars, exposure and fame can be mine if I submit my photographs there. Alternatively, it's just another photo grabbing site, as judged by the legalese in their license agreement. Yes, they could. View my complete profile.
