Philly Gower died at the age of 20 in 2002 at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. She had suffered from cancer for two years. Thanks to the generosity of many friends, £30,000 was raised to fund the library of the Maggie's Centre which was under construction at the time. This seemed an appropriate way in which to recognise Philly's thirst for knowledge and – more importantly – to create a new avenue of support for cancer patients and their families.
