I initially intended to fly in to San Francisco, but I soon discovered some availability for a Club World flight to Los Angeles (upgraded with miles from a purchased World Traveller Plus ticket). This being an 11 hour flight, I decided that I couldn't really resist such luxury and value!

I had built up enough miles in the British Airways Executive Club (BA's frequent flyer programme) to get First class flights with BA to Vancouver. This was very exciting as looking at prices it seemed that the only sensible paid option would be one of the charter airlines, along with their horrible seat pitch in economy. Therefore there was very little thought required! Not bad, eh?

The key places I intended to visit and couldn't on this trip were Chicago and Alaska. Due to the limited vacation time, I decided to split this trip into two parts, an initial 10 day holiday to New York, Boston, Hawaii and San Francisco in June and a second trip later in the year in September to Las Vegas, perhaps the absolute top of my wish list, Las Vegas! The internal flights were booked on BA, they have a franchise partner called Comair which operates internal SA flights. I was staying at friends in Jo'burg and Durban, so all that needed to be planned was Cape Town. This is the wrong time of year to book cheap accommodation in Cape Town, which is rapidly taking over from Durban as the holiday location of choice in SA. Eventually I decided on the Holiday Inn on Strand Street, which used to be the Cape Sun Intercontinental.
