28 Aug 2016, 6:33pm. I’ve been a big fan. Of reading Kindle ebooks for a while now, but so far I have done all my reading on my iPhone. I bought a couple of the earlier Kindle eReaders but never liked them: the page turning, the form factor, something about them just wasn’t as good. As reading on my phone so I didn’t use them much. Last week though, Amazon were doing a deal. Where the latest Kindle. Was 5,000 yen off, so I picked one up for under 4,000 yen. And that’s what hit me. On there (although 90% ...

7 Feb 2016, 11:02am. STEP Eiken 4-kyu, 5-kyu Speaking Test from June 2016. Where are they going to find the interview testers? I just read this press release/informational pamphlet. On the STEP Eiken. Website (thanks for the tip, Mary! From June this year (ie the 2016-1 session of the STEP Eiken test) 5-kyu and 4-kyu will have a speaking test. The new speaking tests will be online. I’m guessing they will get those two annoying voice actors to do the audio (who is that woman, by the way? As you can see (c...

4 Jul 2013, 10:54am. Choose Your Own Adventure readers -in class! Today I am going to introduce a new activity I have been doing with extensive reading classes here at Tohoku University this semester. Our ER classes consist of approximately 45 minutes of silent reading and 45 minutes of supplementary activities including speaking, listening, and writing. One activity that students enjoyed was reading some of the Choose Your Own Adventure. Readers in groups (I got the idea from Marcos Benevides. The teach...

10 Feb 2016, 9:19pm. Selling a Language School in Japan. But what’s it worth? Many people in Japan think about opening their own English school. Some people actually do so. But what is the end game? What happens when you no longer want to operate your school? One option is to sell it. There are many things to consider when selling a school. I’ve been doing a bit of research on this recently, and it’s been interesting and a bit discouraging 🙂. Or a multiple of net annual profit. 2-5 times seems possible).

13 Jul 2015, 2:56pm. Sponsoring a Teacher Visa in Japan Part 2. Wait, that was it? As Trevor rightly pointed out in Part 1. Applying for a visa as an English teacher doesn’t really involve sponsorship, but I wanted to keep the title the same for the second post. More accurately we could describe the process as. 8216;supplying the necessary documents to prove a viable job offer to a teacher applying for a Specialist in Humanities visa’. Copy of the school’s tax return (as it is a personal business). First...

19 Jul 2015, 8:07pm. US Teacher Wins ‘Nobel Prize Of Teaching’. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Global Education and Skills Forum. In March this year, where the first Global Teacher Prize was awarded. One thing that struck me at the time is that of the 50 finalists. Not one was from Japan. Japan has a huge number of passionate educators who deserve recognition. I would love to see some of them in the finalists for the 2016 Global Teacher Prize. Ensuring children receive a values-based educati...
