Mr Gibbons' Social Studies 8. Monday, November 29, 2010. Stocks, Monopolies and Trusts. Today we are looking at vocabulary essential to studying Big Business in the late 1800's. Stocks and Dividends are introduced as well as Monopolies and Trusts. There will be a homework sheet tonight on the importance of Pittsburgh, PA in the development of the U.S. Steel Industry. A Major Test Will be given this Thursday. Student will be given the list of items they need to study and review to prepare for the exam.

Mr Gibbons' Social Studies 8. Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The Start of World War 1. Today we are moving fast into the 20th Century and looking at one of the world's worst wars. Known as "The War to End all Wars" the first world war claimed close to 20 million lives with twice as many injured and millons starving, homeless and without hope. We are focusing on the 4 Main Causes of World War 1 using Stick Figure Theater. We also look at the "spark" that set it all off! See Whiteboard in B-45.

Mr Gibbons' Social Studies 8. Tuesday, December 13, 2011. In today's class we are briefly looking at two more Progressive Era presidents. The presidency of Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison are examined to see how they too contributed to the reform movement started by Garfield and Arthur. Secondly we are looking at 4 words that changed political participation. Dissecting these vocabulary words and making current day comparisons will be the focus of the second half of the class. Mr Gibbons' Social Studies 8. Wednesday, January 18, 2012. The Spark that Started WW1. Today we reviewed the causes of WW1 and today we are lookin at the "spark" that ingnited the TNT! The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 started a chain reaction of events that ended up drawing most of the world into the conflict. Many countries tried to remain neutral, but eventually had to choose a side. Back in America we had to do our best to stay out of the conflict. See Whiteboard in B-45.
