Shiway and I went to Seward and Anchorage for the weekend to do some exploring and the like. First up was a day hike at Tonsina Creek in Seward with Beate and her dog, Daisy. We took along Ann's dog, Nellie, too! The way there is through some thick trees, and finally when getting to the water, everything opens up. This is what it looks like from where we came. And the view we had ahead. Some spawning chum salmon in the water:. Part of the way, the rainforest comes out in full bloom:.

I've learned that people in the Pacific Northwest are really extreme. Be really cautious when you agree to do recreational activities with people you meet here. The day started perfectly. Blue skies, fresh snow, and warm sun on our faces. Photo courtesy of Ian. The views were spectacular the entire way up. As the morning progressed, the hike became steeper. I became more tired, and had to take lots of breaks. Esther and Logan are trekking champs. The wind was annoying, but created a beautiful scape.

Katrina, the great-organizer-of-all-things-wilderness-related, put together an overnighter at Woodland Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness back in August. It was the perfect excuse for me to finally try out my new GoLite backpacking gear, even if it was a super-short trip. Nick, the mountain climber, finds things to climb wherever we go. The lake itself.beautiful view. Wildflowers in Colorado are unbelieveable! The place we set up camp seemed straight out of an REI catalog. Dirt Series MTB Camp. And I co...

Previewing my new life. I spent 4 days in Seattle, looking at housing for my future life at UW. It was a whirlwind tour of over a dozen different properties, ranging from grungy college houses to posh luxury apartments. It was a pretty miserable experience, but I had the chance to visit old friends, family, and have some fun. Linda bought this boat when she was a PhD student at UW studying Aeronautics and Astronautics.I think she was trying to hint at something when she told me this. :). On a good day, y...

A first look through a Holga. For my photography class, we're required to use a toy camera- a Holga, to be specific- for one of our assignments. Although they're not very expensive, I haven't really had a reason to acquire one until now. Lafayette Oatmeal Festival '10. Saturday was the Lafayette Oatmeal Festival! I did the 5K, and the year before that. I just indulged in the oatmeal (have I really been keeping a blog for that long? The starting line.it was chilly that morning. New Year's Eve Eve. On Dec&...

Remember how as a kid, you think things like, "Wow, when I am a grown-up, I am going to use my money to buy toys and play with them all day. I'm also going to eat ice cream whenever I want, and I'll be able to choose what I do and when I do it! Then we grow up, and those things aren't necessarily true. Those sentiments turn to fiscal responsibility, health concerns, and general understanding of how a job really works. And my first time getting stitches. This story is a bit long. After the scolding, they ...

Year of the Tiger! It's that delicious time of year again.Chinese New Year! This year is the year of the tiger, which is the year of mom, Shiway, and Ryan! No New Year celebration is complete without the Asian potluck littered with New Year goodies. Hard to tell what is there.but I'm sure there's about 9 different animals. Between the Taiwanese sweet sausage (香腸), squid, honey duck, salmon (two kinds! Everyone has to wear red. :) Ryan is an exception, because he has red hair. Glutinous red bean cake.

Day 3 of our trip saw us through the Joint Trail. Not a slot canyon, but a natural crevice between two large rocks. It was really cool, but very narrow! Had to take my pack off at one point just to get through. There were spectacular views every day. It's hard to whittle down the photo selection to my favorites. That night, we had Chili Mac for dinner.if it weren't for the wind constantly blowing out the stove fire and getting sand in my bowl, I probably would have enjoyed it much more. The first night w...

I recently finished Rocket Men: The Epic Story of the First Men on the Moon. Translating to " towards the unknown. This motto hails from the Edwards AFB, where Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier in the X-1, Neil Armstrong tested the X-15, the Space Shuttle made its first landings. We are all aware that we are traveling towards our own unknowns, and what differs so much from person to person is how we handle and plan for our futures. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The joys and sorrows of rainy spring. Let's start with the sorrows:. Obvious damper on any and all outdoor activity. It's cold, but not cold enough for fun snow. Trigged allergies by everything blooming all the time. EVERYTHING IS BLOOMING ALL THE TIME! It's not the most populous area, so we were doing our best to keep our eyes peeled.as we were driving down a side road through some pastures, I asked, "will there be a sign? How will we know we're there? Mike, Alex, Sarah, me, and Ryan.
