Plant News: New genetic tools for working with peas

http://plantnews.blogspot.com/2008/02/new-genetic-tools-for-working-with-peas.html

Tuesday, February 26, 2008. New genetic tools for working with peas. The pea is one of many important crop species that is unsuited to the Agrobacterium-based genetic modification techniques that are commonly used to work with crops. Researchers, reporting in the open access journal Genome Biology have now discovered the first high-throughput forward and reverse genetics tool for the pea (Pisum sativum), could have major benefits for crop breeders around the world. Plant News: Composting to fight climate change?

http://plantnews.blogspot.com/2008/02/composting-to-end-climate-change.html

Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Composting to fight climate change? Applying organic fertilizers, such as those resulting from composting, to agricultural land could increase the amount of carbon stored in these soils and contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, according to new research published in a special issue of Waste Management and Research (Special issue published today by SAGE). The number - 0.15% - seems small, but this is deceptive - it's still an awful lot of ca...

Plant News: Draft corn genome

http://plantnews.blogspot.com/2008/02/draft-corn-genome.html

Tuesday, February 26, 2008. A team of scientists led by Washington University in St. Louis has begun to unlock the genetic secrets of corn, a crop vital to U.S. agriculture. The researchers have completed a working draft of the corn genome, an accomplishment that should accelerate efforts to develop better crop varieties to meet society's growing demands for food, livestock feed and fuel. Fish Stories: September 2014

http://iansfish.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, 20 September 2014. Things quickly went from bad. Already on Friday (the day I did the water change) I noticed that they water wasn't terribly clear; by Saturday it was noticeably more cloudy. The algae on the driftwood was also growing like crazy, and I removed a lot more of it. Saturday evening I visited the pet store in search of Flourish Excel and found instead API CO. Boost, and the water kept getting greener and greener. By Tuesday afternoon the water was very green and cloudy. After the w...

Fish Stories: September 2009

http://iansfish.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, 17 September 2009. It's been 10 days since my last post. I have long since reduced the temperature to normal and turned off the UV sterilisers. There's no evidence of ich on any of the fish. I'm inclined to think that the treatment worked. The infection with them, or whether they picked it up. In my tank. I suppose the best thing to do is to observe the group of baby guppies that were born about a week ago. Not that guppies seem to be terribly susceptible. Links to this post. Hitting the litera...

Fish Stories: October 2009

http://iansfish.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 October 2009. While I've heard reports of putative Corydoras. Hybrids, I have never seen any direct evidence of interspecific mating until this past week. My main tank has a variety of corys - Corydoras panda. A probable C. trilineatus. And another species whose identity I don't know. While I started off with several C. trilineatus. I only have one left. And apparently it's a female. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A new idea, my original blog. Further Thoughts, my main blog.

Fish Stories: Managing algae II

http://iansfish.blogspot.com/2014/09/managing-algae.html

Friday, 12 September 2014. The following combination is a great recipe for an algae outbreak: a relatively new tank, fairly high fish stocking, new lights and a long photoperiod. And that would be where I find myself. My driftwood has always supported a large population of Cladophora. To be the bane of their existence, I'm actually fond of it, as long as it stays on that piece of wood. It does require regular removal, but given its coarse texture, it is actually quite easy to remove. Judging by the Googl...

Fish Stories: Observations on Serpae tetra behaviour

http://iansfish.blogspot.com/2014/09/observations-on-serpae-tetra-behaviour.html

Saturday, 13 September 2014. Observations on Serpae tetra behaviour. As I mentioned previously, I recently acquired a school of Serpae tetras. And they weren't quite what I expected. Though the fault was mine for not doing better research). So a couple weeks on, what do I think of them? These may not be Serpae tetras. Expanded. Sometimes the fish that's attacked will swim off (in which case the aggressor seems to give chase) while other times they will spin around and stand their ground, responding w...

Planting new New Hampshire

Planting new New Hampshire. Friday, July 3, 2009. Unity (By Fellowship or On Truth). The restoration plea still goes out today. Raccoon John Smith (speaking for disciples) after pleading for unity closed his message , “Let us then my brethren neither be Stonites nor Campbellites. Let’s just be lights from the Bible.” In pleading for unity, what are we really asking for? What does it mean to be united? An even better question is, does it matter what we unite on?
