New Mexico can be hot in the day and cold at night, it is the desert after all. So always be prepared, even if you don't intend to be out in the evening it is better to have some warm cloths just in case. When hiking the Plaza Blanca wear comfortable clothes, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. Given the unpredictable weather a hat, rain gear, a flashlight, sun block, bug repellent, and a jacket or sweater just in case are better.

Made famous by local artists Georgia OKeeffe, these landscapes in a valley of the Rio Chama hills near the village of Abiquiu, when she made a series of paintings about the places she called The White Place, or in Spanish Plaza Blanca, this area of New Mexico is now on the grounds of the Dar Al Islam education center and mosque. This web site is designed to draw attention and provide information on this remarkable piece both of American landscape, but also historic and artistic interest.

While the White Place has of course been there for geological times it did not become what we today consider the Plaza Blanca until it was made famous by the paintings of O'Keeffe, and she did not arrive in the area until 1929, but at first she did not live in the area and only visited for part of the year. Things to see and do Nearby. Visit Ghost Ranch - Now run by the Presbyterian Church, it provides a small museum and shop to visit. This is where Georgia O'Keeffe lived before moving to Abiquiu next to Plaza Blanca. Take route 84 north. Take a side trip to Abiquiu Lake and Reservoir - great views. A lot can be seen by driving along route 84 towards Ghost Ranch but a side trip along route 96.
