Saturday, February 21, 2009. I'm Sorry" and "Congratulations": Death and Poetry. All week, I've experienced a juxtaposition of "I'm so sorry for your loss" and "Congratulations! Side by side, sometimes even simultaneously, like at my father-in-law's funeral when one person gave me a copy of the small article on me being named poet laureate in the Kansas City Star. And remember, life sucks" or "This too shall pass, so don't get too excited about any of it.". In the End, There Is Only Kindness. Don't worry...

Monday, April 27, 2009. Spring and the Bar Mitzvah Express. Spring has sprung wildly in the last few days thanks to several days of fast, hot wind and the several more days of intense rain. Meanwhile, we're working in the yard continuously, riding the Bar Mitzvah express which. Is high-speed, expensive and has frequent breakdowns. The great part of this is how much time we have outside. The not-so-great part is how. Your Program or Project. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Brave Voice (CMG...

Tuesday, March 24, 2009. I Live In Big Wind Country. Yesterday, semi-trucks overturned on the turnpike, mailboxes left home, our bird feeder flew the coop, and the top of a hard-plastic child playhouse unfurled itself. It was the kind of wind that made me and everyone around me feel a little crazy, off-balance, agitated, confused and overwhelmed. It reminds me of a good wind story too - and in Kansas, many of the good weather. Your Program or Project. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Wild ...

The work of happiness. Monday, February 12, 2007. A Change of Heart: A Valentine's Story. Anne Lamott, in Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith. Writes about a friend of hers who practices a spiritual path called Diamond Heart. Her friend tells her that our hearts are like diamonds “because they have the capacity to express divine light, which is love; we are not only portals for this love, but are actually made of it.”. My mother’s best fiend (I’ll call her Ethel) is telling me this story over t...8220;They...

the work of happiness: Morning Ride
http://workofhappiness.blogspot.com/2007/01/morning-ride.html
The work of happiness. Tuesday, January 02, 2007. A typical ride to school with Noah, 10, Jacob, 8, and Gabriel, 1. Sometimes, all you have to do is sit back and listen. Jacob: “Are we going to be late? Mama: “No, we’re not going to be late.”. Jacob: “We stayed at home for quite a while after I had my coat on.”. Mama: “That’s because you put your coat on 20 minutes before we had to leave.”. Noah: “Gabe, keys for the baby! J: “Cheese for the baby? I gave him his toy keys.”. J: “Oh.". I mean, America?

the work of happiness: Holidays 2007
http://workofhappiness.blogspot.com/2007/11/holidays-2007.html
The work of happiness. Friday, November 30, 2007. It was wonderful to have a friend who said things like that. And she was exactly right, too; all the tales, big and small, come from just…life, and there is always so much to be told. Just a few more feet! I’ll close with another line from Garrison Keillor, who is without question one of the greatest American writers of all time: “Thank you, God, for this good life, and forgive us if we do not love it enough.”.
