Cultural and Social Incongruities

Cultural and Social Incongruities. Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Remembering Arloa and Chuck White. How many young people in Duchesne learned how to dance – square dancing, ballroom dancing, line dancing – from Mrs. White in elementary school? How many young people in Duchesne learned to be more responsible for their own actions by interacting with Mrs. White in elementary school? And who didn’t love to see Mrs. White riding around town on her scooter? One Sunday, after Chuck and I were home teaching compa...

Cultural and Social Incongruities: Bridging the Gap: Law Enforcement and Community Relations

Cultural and Social Incongruities. Friday, May 1, 2015. Bridging the Gap: Law Enforcement and Community Relations. While I don’t think we have the knowledge, wisdom, or capacity to address the root causes of the overall crisis, I do think we can alleviate some serious symptoms. Perhaps by taking some first steps in addressing this symptom, we can develop the ability to see more clearly, understand more clearly and make other meaningful changes aimed at the root causes. Conduct a polling of all law enforc...

Cultural and Social Incongruities: March 2015

http://politicsofwork.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Cultural and Social Incongruities. Monday, March 16, 2015. Escape on the Lake. Quiet and gray, crispness in the air. Clouds and surface combine in one. Snowflakes fall heavily into dark water. Pulling on the oar, my breath freezes. The shore recedes, gray water surrounds. Mountains rise above our cabin set on a hill. Snow attaches slowly on evergreen needles. Ripples run outward from the silver canoe. Horses in the pasture stamp feet. Field lays fallow, yellow stubble wetted. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Cultural and Social Incongruities. Monday, August 25, 2014. The Blessing of Wonderful Teachers: A Look Back. Today I sent four of my six children to school—a high school sophomore, an 8. Grader, a 5. Grader, and a 2. Next year we will have a kindergartner to add to the list. This is also the beginning of our second year of 18 years of early morning seminary. Last night, as their father, I had the special privilege of giving each of them a blessing as they go into another school year. She always made me f...

The Flip Side: 1st day of school

http://thevanwagoners.blogspot.com/2011/10/1st-day-of-school.html

Tales of our family. October 17, 2011. 1st day of school. Elijah and Gracee started a brand new charter school this year. Uniforms and all (and pink is not a color option.) Gracee is not so thrilled about the uniforms but she is surviving. Elijah's teacher is Mrs. Stewart. Gracee has Mrs. Ables. Emmalee goes to school pretty early and I forgot to take a picture before she left. She had a headache by the time she got home. Gracee was pretty jealous of her 1st day outfit! Gracee and Elijah loved it!

Tales of our family. March 23, 2011. This is for you! I hope they are as cute on her as there were on Lucy! We think she is pretty darn cute! Oh, and you made the flower too! The purple on the wall behind her is one of the flowers that I spent hours painting. Maybe if you are all lucky I will post better pictures of them one day. She really did wear that to school! Luckily this was a Saturday! I thought her children would appreciate these someday! Don't play with matches! This is baby Evan. He offici...

Tales of our family. December 31, 2013. What Happened in 2013? Or, we didn't do Christmas Cards again. Clara is a handful. She's smart. She's funny. She's bossy. Walking came to her pretty quickly, right around her first birthday. She likes to draw and color on anything she can find. Traveling in the van is not her idea of a good time. And Katy Perry's "Roar". Elizabeth is excited to graduate from Nursery to the Sunbeam Primary class at church. Lizzie loving the snow. Isaiah Digging 1st Grade.

Tales of our family. January 10, 2012. I didn't send out Christmas cards (again). So if you aren't on Facebook, here is what we look like these days. We move someplace warm and we end up getting a cold weather picture this year. But, I try to never pass up an opportunity to have someone else pay for a family picture. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Tales of our family. October 5, 2010. We really do. But it seems when you have five kids, that it is difficult to get everyone to look the same place at the same time with pleasant expressions and eyes open. Thanks to our wonderful friend Sarah who was very patient with our fussiness, grumpiness, lack of smiling, crooked heads, awkward smiles, and closed eyes (I think Isaiah did all of the above)! I hope they make you smile as much as they do me! I have handsome boys! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Tales of our family. April 11, 2011. The girls got a great game at Activity Days that asks all kinds of questions about yourself. We have enjoyed playing and getting to know each other better. I decided that it would be nice to interview each kid today and record their answers. I also added a few recent pictures. They are numbered by birth order and not by their place in my heart. ;). Favorite Foods: Pizza and Hot Dogs. Favorite Dessert: Vanilla Ice Cream. Favorite Sports: Football, Soccer, and Baseball.

Tales of our family. April 23, 2015. Emmalee and Bob Circa 2000. Sadness and sorrow can cause the happy moments in life to stand out more sharply. Tonight our family experienced some of that sadness and painful sorrow that caused us to reflect deeply on the happiness and joy we’ve experienced over the past fifteen years. We reached the decision that it is time to let Bob go, to let him move past his pain and suffering. Early one morning he had a terrible run-in with nature. All of us were asleep when...

The great thing about being a girl is that dresses are WAY fun to play with! We had so many wonderful people join us! This little girl is loved by so many people! Before the blessing we had some of Jarad's wonderful grilled Hawaiian Chicken. Here is Miss Elizabeth with all of her wonderful Grandparents!

Tales of our family. January 12, 2015. I gave this talk in Ward Conference on Sunday, January 11, 2015. I thought this would be a good place to share it with the family. Honestly I didn't remember it was Steven's birthday until last night. I thought it was wonderful that I included him and the blessings he brought into our family in a talk I gave on his birthday without even realizing it. The Wretched of the Earth and Do the Right Thing. Monday, May 4, 2009. Sexuality of the Disabled. Disabling Conditions and Sexuality. Society looks upon the disabled in terms of the problem only. By focusing only on the disability instead of attempting to normalize their lifestyles as much as possible, their view of life is negatively impacted. Those affected by disabilities and illnesses can benefit from a more positive and understanding view of themselves. Sexuality can. Similarly for the disabled, the...

politics of wine | Making sense of the politics of wine

Making sense of the politics of wine. Wine is Wine, not an Opinion. Yes, I’m back in the proverbial writing saddle here at Politics of Wine. To say I’ve had many consecutive months of writer’s block would be an understatement. I could barely get motivated to even think of rating another wine. Things just didn’t feel right. I’ve spent some time doing some ‘soul searching’, or in wine speak, I spent time ‘aging’ so my creative tannins mellow and round out in the right direction. A whole world of wine exist...

Zee Politics of Zee Canada. The greatest WordPress.com site in all the land! Bev Oda Is A Greedy Pig. Asymp; Leave a comment. Although this is news from last month it still makes me sick that Canadian politicians such as Bev Oda think that us taxpayers will continue footing her bill of lavish travels in the name of international aid or relations. Thursday, March 13, 2008. Why Decry The Truth. So we have another "controversy" over statements made by a big wig in one of the Democratic presidential. Please note that I have not seen the video so I don't know how it actually game off and have only seen edited quotes so I do acknowledge that sometimes things don't come out as well as they seemed when we formed the thought in our head.) This time it's Geraldine Ferraro saying that Obama's. And why are they acting like it's a bad thing to acknowledge it?
