Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community.: November 2013

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Friday Field Notes: Oh, I Have Been Inspired! I love nature journaling, but, frankly, it has been a number of months since I have opened my journal. A few weeks ago I noticed that MNHC was offering a weekend drawing workshop with the talented Nancy Seiler. I thought to myself, what better way to get back into nature journaling than to take a class where I must make keen observations of natural objects and draw them for 8 hours a day? Entry 1: November 20th, 2013.

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Traveling in the Backcountry: the essentials. A cold sweat chills me from under my backpack straps. The rhythm of my ascent up the clean white mountain side hypnotizes me. S lide-clack slide-clack. Exploring backcountry terrain in winter is inherently risky, so there are a few things I bring along in my backpack and in my brain to try to minimize that risk or avoid it altogether. It is really important to continually check the depth of the snow pack you're trave...

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community.: Under the Microscope: The Spring Equinox
http://montananaturalist.blogspot.com/2014/03/under-microscope-spring-equinox.html
Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Under the Microscope: The Spring Equinox. The Equinoxes only happen twice per year, around March 20. And mark the generally accepted beginnings of spring and autumn, respectively. It’s easy to forget though that just as our northern hemisphere is slowly blooming into spring, the southern hemisphere will be celebrating the autumn harvest. Another interesting fact: the sun rises precisely from the east and sets precisely in the west on equinoxes. What Bird is That?

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Friday Field Notes: What's Blooming in Missoula? By now, you must certainly feel like we've turned the corner here in western Montana and are well on our way to Spring. Sure, we've seen this before. Only a few weeks ago, temperatures were peaking in the 60s, and what did Mother Nature serve us up next? A week of rain and snow! Shooting Stars on Waterworks Hill. Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Friday Field Notes: A Little Face on a Quaking Aspen Leaf. Last Friday, September 6th, I enjoyed a leisurely hike up to the Blodgett Canyon Overlook in the Bitterroot National Forest. The warm sun was muffled by a scattering of grayish clouds, allowing the temperature to stay below 85 degrees. It was a perfect day for a short adventure. I learned that this caterpillar was a Western Tiger Swallowtail, or Papilio rutulus. Montana Natural History Center. The missio...

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community.: Guest Post: Mystery Butterfly
http://montananaturalist.blogspot.com/2014/09/guest-post-mystery-butterfly.html
Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Guest Post: Mystery Butterfly. Observations and photos submitted by naturalist Kim Birck, late July 2014. Yesterday a butterfly I’d never seen before visited my yard. It had the colors of a swallowtail, but no tails, and it didn’t match anything I could find by doing a Google image search for “black and yellow butterflies.". However, eNature was no help in figuring out who the mystery visitor actually was. The categories I might have chosen from their list.

Home - Center for Food Safety: Popcorn's Dirty Secret
Bees are dying at alarming rates, and scientists have identified a group of insecticides called neonicotinoids ( neonics ) as a prime culprit in these drastic population losses. Neonic pesticides are used primarily as a seed coating and America’s #1 popcorn brand, Orville Redenbacher, is serving us popcorn grown from these neonic-coated seeds. Sign the Petition: Tell Orville Redenbacher to Stop Killing Bees! Adding your name to the petition . View the full petition text here. Guide to Bee-Friendly Popcorn.
