America in Broke Land: The Summer of the Bike
http://americainbrokeland.blogspot.com/2009/07/summer-of-bike.html
America in Broke Land. Wednesday, July 29, 2009. The Summer of the Bike. This is the summer of the bike. Let me clarify: the bike I never ride. Figuratively, the baby blue Ross Europa that stands precariously in the hallway of my building is a symbol. When I think of symbolism, I now think of reading my friend's AP students' essays about The Heart of Darkness. Is it a coincidence that symptom and symbol sound so similar? For the love of god, go take a bike-ride in the park! Do it for me! Ride, ride, ride!

the artful debtor: Sallie Mae

You're going to be a good blogger." - Ben Mattison, ex-blogger. Thursday, April 4, 2013. Listen to Elvis while you read! So like I said, I was pissed. But it turns out that I didn't really need to be. Sallie Mae has been super helpful and very solicitous about my concerns over the last month when a lot of things have been changing. I've called them a few times, and I'll sort of log the calls below. There's a prize at the end! I'M UNEMPLOYED AND I JUST HAD SURGERY! I let like.4 weeks go by. I think that w...

America in Broke Land: Fictional Account
http://americainbrokeland.blogspot.com/2009/07/fictional-account.html
America in Broke Land. Friday, July 31, 2009. It was then that she decided that she would throw herself into the task of writing jokes. She scanned the room looking for traces of humor in otherwise humorless faces. She began to wonder if she should see a movie instead. Maybe laughter begets humor. Her throat felt tender, as if she were getting sick, but she knew she wasn’t. What if the joke was on her? Wasn’t that all just a round-about way of saying: you only desire what you can’t have? And the Tiger Pit.

You're going to be a good blogger." - Ben Mattison, ex-blogger. Wednesday, July 29, 2009. Can I afford dental insurance? Or can I afford not to have it? I just can't figure that question out. When I went to the dentist to get my two fillings a few months ago, he indicated I would probably need a root canal sooner rather than later. So, I guess I'd like some advice. It doesn't feel like a clear choice. Thursday, July 23, 2009. I guess I saw it there on the shelf and something told me it was the right time...

You're going to be a good blogger." - Ben Mattison, ex-blogger. Monday, September 28, 2009. HOLY CRAP. I can't even believe my eyes. I'm flabbergasted that this is legal. Even pay-day loan/check cashing scam-a-thons aren't that high. It's seriously fucking mind-boggling. Criminals. A bunch of criminals that all of us are forced to do business with because the damn FICO thugs have taken over our financial lives in the last two decades. How is this not loan-sharking? How is this not organized crime?

You're going to be a good blogger." - Ben Mattison, ex-blogger. Sunday, May 24, 2009. So, my two checking account system isn't even fully in place (still waiting on the debit card from the new account, hoping the mail doesn't screw me over again), and it's already relieving a lot of stress. . Also, I used my credit card for the first time yesterday for a metrocard. $10. Felt a little weird, but I know I've got a handle on things. . And I filled out a new Fafsa to prepare for grad school. Oh! So, I have s...
