Inbetween Days: May 2009
http://lyrians.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 26, 2009. A little rain - little water song - city rain/city streets. Confession: I am enjoying a natural disaster. I know this means I'm playing with karma, and earning some of the negative kind, but I can't help it. My paltry excuse is that I am from a country where the Google. Keyword search results for "drought" would number in the quadbillions (if there is such a thing) so I have a reason to get all excited over rain. Off come the thongs. I know, I know, there was a lot more than 'water...

Inbetween Days: Shelter from the storm
http://lyrians.blogspot.com/2009/06/shelter-from-storm.html
Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Shelter from the storm. While I was busy entertaining the Chittagongian city-folk during Cyclone Aila, the coastal areas and islands in Bangladesh were (and still are) having a tougher time of it. In terms of cyclone severity, it didn't rate very high on the danger scale, however so much damage has been caused because the cyclone hit at high tide, which meant already high waters just went higher, and higher, and higher. Inbetween Days: Tightrope
http://lyrians.blogspot.com/2009/03/tightrope.html
Sunday, March 1, 2009. So the 'gun battle' turned into a bloody mutiny of Bangladesh's border troops in Dhaka, complete with horrendous mass graves, mutilated bodies, and nation-wide condemnation. It looks as if things are settling down now, but this is a scary and sad reminder that democracy and law and order in Bangladesh remain fragile. OMG - here I am worrying about getting the keys for my shop and your worrying about stray bullets and tumbling into mass graves! Monday, March 02, 2009.

Inbetween Days: Border Song
http://lyrians.blogspot.com/2009/09/border-song.html
Sunday, September 27, 2009. Things I’m going to love not missing. 3 Living in a petri dish of putrification. The sheer stench of humanity has caught me unawares in Bangladesh. Of course I expected some stinkiness. I’ve traveled through countries with worrisome approaches to sewage before, let alone markets, food and all the other sources of smell. But true to style, Bangladesh takes the smelliness factor to a whole new level. Between the smell of everyone’s morning er, business; the pong of animal ...

Inbetween Days: Lullaby
http://lyrians.blogspot.com/2009/10/lullaby.html
Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Things I'm going to miss loving. 4 Getting my gear on. Know what it’s like to dress up as a grape? What it’s like to wear your pyjamas to work every day? How it feels walking into a meeting with conservative VIPs in thongs? What it’s like to not have a fat day? I do, I do, I do! 8217;, or ‘how dressed up should I be? 8217;, or ‘am I having a fat day or a thin day? That is the wonder of the salwar kameez. I'll play the grape in today's fruit cocktail. 4 This means WAR. Cockroac...

Inbetween Days: Weekend(s) without makeup
http://lyrians.blogspot.com/2009/03/weekends-without-makeup.html
Tuesday, March 10, 2009. Some days end more excitingly than others. I was reminded of that yesterday as my day in the field ended with this:. Just an idea…. Now, I’m aware this blog has been a little less than rosy lately, so I thought it was time to share some of the truly cool and wonderful and fun and exciting things I’ve been up to in an effort to boost the mood in a totally legal, clean living kind of way. And what better place to start than at Adventure Land and Paradise Valley! The market in town ...

Letters for Literary Ladies: Emilie de Coulanges
http://lettersforliteraryladies.blogspot.com/2008/12/emilie-de-coulanges.html
Letters for Literary Ladies. Monday, December 8, 2008. I found this a much more engaging novel than Madame de Fleury. This is not a perfect novel - the romance plot is a bit tacked on, and there is a miraculous restoration of the de Coulanges fortune a la Madame de Fleury. However, for the psychological complexity of the interaction between Emilie and Mrs Somers along, this is well worth a read. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Letters for Literary Ladies: Henrietta
http://lettersforliteraryladies.blogspot.com/2008/12/henrietta.html
Letters for Literary Ladies. Friday, December 26, 2008. I found this novel really wonderful. Henrietta is a great heroine, and mercifully does not faint as much as Lennox's Harriot Stuart. Lennox has wonderful comic timing and the social satire in this novel is brilliant. I really enjoyed her portrayal of Miss Woodby, which I think may just have influenced Austen's portrayal of Isabella Thorpe in Northanger Abbey. And Lord B's proposal to Henrietta echoes both Pamela. And Pride and Prejudice. Great resou...
