Friday, August 2, 2013. I took my holidays early this year so I'm spending the summer in Birmingham working, writing and helping to organise the PowWow LitFest. Given that we've actually had some sunny weather this summer, I'm not feeling sorry for myself. After all, Birmingham does look like a tourist destination sometimes.

Observations of an expat living in Afghanistan. So every time I go to a meeting with (client in heavily secured compound with a bazillion checkpoints, adorable curly-haired bomb-sniffing dog and very intimate full-body checks including a lady that actually lifted up my skirt today) we submit our car description/names/identification/first-born children-as-collateral so that they will let us in–and every time, the reason they actually let us in is because my driver calls his cousin.
