Gilbert's Potoroo is known only from a single, very small population on Mount Gardner, in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, near Albany, Western Australia. Gilbert's Potoroo was discovered for science in 1840 by John Gilbert, an English naturalist and collector working in Western Australia for the zoologist John Gould.
